About

Hey, I'm Laine! My passion lies in the pleasure of figuring things out and learning, whether that manifests itself in the immense beauty of mathematics, the lessons from history and literature, or art! I'm currently a student of The University of Queensland's Bachelor of Science (Physics, Math), with a plan to go into academia and pursue higher studies. I graduated from Ormiston College in 2022. I strongly believe that the most effective way to learn is for students to develop an intense curiosity about their subjects and a desire to figure out how something works. Only then can you intuitively and properly apply it in real life! I first use a conceptual and intuitive approach when teaching my student (important!), to make sure there is a strong foundation where their application of the relevant knowledge can be built upon. This avoids rote-learning, and the illusion of understanding something. Applying this knowledge through regular exercises will then develop a student's practical understanding and reasoning skills! My tutoring mainly specialises in mathematics, but I am open to other subjects on request. There is an innate pleasure and beauty in learning and my goal is to let my students understand this feeling as well. If I can instil this joy of learning in anyone and see it manifest in their academic performance, I consider my work successful. Some quotes: "Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.” "If you want to master something, teach it. The more you teach, the better you learn. Teaching is a powerful tool to learning." ― Richard P. Feynman, physicist, The Great Explainer "If you are receptive and humble, mathematics will lead you by the hand." ― Paul Dirac, theoretical physicist Don't let anyone tell you that you can't learn something!
