That was me. I would open my school reports, holding my breath. I’d scroll down. Double digits stared back at me. 40s. 50s. A glaring 157th in English. At school the next day, my friends would crowd in tight circles. They fired off will-o-wisps of gossip about who topped what subject. Word of the "smart kids" and "high achievers" spread like wildfire. I just listened. Head laid low. I envied them. But I didn't step up to compete. I wanted to be better, but the motivation wasn't there. I thought those top ranks were an unattainable dream for the lazy, procrastinating, average old me. This endless routine would never change. Until it did. Hello, I’m Claire Zhang! I graduated from Hurlstone Agricultural High School as an All-Rounder with a 98.95 ATAR. In my Year 12 semester 2 reports, I suddenly hit the top 5 in three of my subjects. I went on to rank 1st and 2nd in 3U and 4U Maths for trials and the HSC, putting me right on par with the James Ruse and Baulkham Hills kids I always thought were worlds away. Along with the state rankers in maths and science I’m working with, students have achieved 99.95’s, and state rank marks. 🌕 𝗠𝗬 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 How did I escape the "average" trap? I changed my gameplan. Instead of comfortably repeating what I already knew in different formats, I tackled the practice questions that actually challenged me. When I made mistakes, I didn't hide from them. I logged them. I obsessively came back to review them—especially the silly ones. Through my own tutors, I developed a thorough understanding of the content and formed concrete, stepwise strategies to break down every single type of question. I now firmly believe there is no such thing as being ‘naturally smart’. There is only the right strategy. Difference 1: When learning, I stopped doing the easy stuff and put in extra effort to form stepwise strategies for the hardest topics. Now when teaching, I show the meaning and the motivation behind concepts, breaking them down step-by-step. This helps students “get” them on a deeper level and easily answer harder questions in exams. Difference 2: I used to rush and make silly mistakes. Once I forced myself to track my errors and logically connect each step, the concepts began to “click” and my marks climbed.
