My relationship with English as a subject has not always been rosy: I scored average marks throughout junior years, and finally realised that something had to change after receiving a C in Year 10. It is this experience that makes me acutely aware of what strategies need to be implemented to transform your English skills completely. My mentorship focuses on three main pillars: Foundations, Deep Textual Understanding and Appreciation, and Confidence. FOUNDATIONS Unfortunately, I see too many students reach Year 11 or 12 without the foundational skills necessary for the HSC. Through my own experience, as well as my expertise in guiding students, I am confident in my ability to help you quickly build strong foundations in essay, analytical, and creative writing. DEEP TEXTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION The best way to ensure failure in English is to approach each Module and text with a checklist mindset (read Sparknotes ✅, memorise essay ✅, hope for the best ✅). But success in English stems from a profound understanding of the ideas and authorial choices that render each text meaningful. I mentor students to read like critics and writers who can easily connect the text's ideas to broader human experiences and interpretations. CONFIDENCE English is widely regarded as the most hated HSC subject, and I absolutely understand where this sentiment comes from: the texts are long and hard to understand, feedback is often vague, and nothing seems to make your writing sound sophisticated. Through guided feedback, exam strategy, and the unique insight I have earned, I help students develop confidence in their ideas and expression.
