My name is Tom Collins and I'm an experienced tutor in French and Chinese up to the HSC Extension level. At the beginning of high school, the only language I spoke was English – but by the end of Year 12, I achieved three state ranks in HSC French and Chinese subjects. I am now studying languages, international relations and linguistics at university. Whether you are looking to excel as a non-native learner or a native speaker looking to polish your written skills and exam technique, I am excited to work with you to develop your language skills, using all the tips and tricks I have picked up along my language journey! I have the experience and knowledge to help you succeed: – I have tutored high school (including HSC) students in French and Chinese since the beginning of 2025. – In addition to achieving top HSC results, I was the top student in French and Chinese at Sydney Grammar School. – I hold a Diploma in Advanced French Language awarded by the French Ministry of Education at level C2, the highest credential for non-native speakers of French, certifying me to work and study at the highest levels in France. – In August 2025 I travelled to China to represent Australia in an international Chinese language competition and advanced to the top 30 contestants. I am passionate about helping students achieve their goals through patience and diligence and I adapt my method to suit your needs. Whether you want to go through practice responses, just practise speaking for an hour, or delve into complex grammar, I have the resources to help you succeed - textbooks at a variety of levels, past exam questions, grammar summaries and more. I can provide detailed feedback on spoken and written responses. And if you are after some cultural enrichment beyond the HSC, I have plenty of literature, audio and video resources to recommend! Language learning requires a considerable amount of time and effort, and it can be difficult to balance it with other subjects and extracurricular activities. This is something I learned to manage and I can help you with it too. Alongside my language subjects, I scored top band HSC results in Extension 1 Maths and English and participated in extracurricular music and leadership opportunities. In Year 11, I was Dux of my year and the top student in English Advanced, as well as top of French and Chinese. Please note that I am currently offering: – French tutoring for Year 7–12 students (including all HSC courses: Beginners, Continuers and Extension) – Chinese tutoring for Year 7–10 students I offer lessons at $100/hour, paid for individually with no long-term commitment. My preference is for online lessons over Zoom or similar platforms, as in my experience this is most convenient for all involved, however I may be able to travel for in person lessons subject to distance and availability.
