About

Talk to me about language - we can make it make sense! I'm a traditionally published novelist with a Ph.D. in Education in language, literacy, and culture. I teach English, Writing, French, and Japanese. I speak French and Japanese fluently and my accent can fool native speakers (and has!). I won't just make you memorise - I can break down the details of what you're learning and explain how it works, and why. Learning a language (even your own!) is about more than just "sending messages" or completing assignments. It's about finding your voice, expressing yourself, and representing yourself in the way you want to people across the world. I have extensive experience working with neurodivergent students and can tailor lessons to your needs. More about my specialties: French: I learned French as a child, and have traveled extensively in France and lived with host families there while studying French. I love French art, literature, and history, and the different forms of French used around the world. I also enjoy French rap by artists like Stromae and Willy William. Japanese: I discovered Japanese at university, and dived right in! I lived in Japan for a total of three years, including one heavenly year with a host family in Kyoto. I love Japanese art and history. My doctoral dissertation looked at Japanese classroom teaching, specifically the teaching of formal and casual styles, which many students struggle with. English/Writing: I always enjoyed writing, but everything changed when I started studying linguistics, which gave me tools to break down and explain the patterns behind the terms we used in class. I have taught workshops in high school about what grammar is for and why it's worth learning (and really cool, actually). I also teach workshops about worldbuilding and characterisation for science fiction and fantasy. I have published numerous short works of science fiction and fantasy in Analog and Clarkesworld magazines, and my book series was published by DAW Books in 2020-2022. You can Google them if you like!
