About
🌟 ENGLISH TUTOR | Mandarin & English | Years 7–12 | HSC Standard, EAL/D, Advanced & Extension 1
Hi! I’m Kate, an English tutor who has been teaching students from Years 7–12 since 2024.
My strength as a tutor is breaking English down into clear, practical steps, especially the skills students are often told to improve without being shown exactly how.
If you have ever received feedback such as:
“You’re retelling the plot instead of analysing.”
“Show, don’t tell.”
“Your analysis needs to be more sophisticated.”
“You need to link back to the question.”
but still do not know what you are actually supposed to change, this is exactly what I focus on in my lessons.
I treat English almost like solving a puzzle. We break each skill into smaller steps, understand why something works, practise it together, and build the confidence to apply it independently.
⭐ STUDENT RESULTS
Some student achievements include:
• A Chinese-background EAL/D student who initially struggled with English developed her creative writing skills to achieve 18/20.
• A Year 11 English Extension 1 student achieved 90% in her first assignment, followed by 17/20 and 18/20 across the essay and creative writing sections of her Preliminary examination.
• English Standard students who initially struggled to distinguish between plot retelling and textual analysis have developed the confidence to independently analyse techniques, ideas and authorial purpose in comprehension responses.
• A Year 9 Chinese-background student progressed from struggling to understand English texts to achieving 95% and 90% in school English examinations, including in-class essays and creative writing tasks.
I value both strong marks and genuine improvement. Every student starts at a different level, so progress can also mean becoming more confident, independent and capable of applying skills without constant guidance.
🌟BILINGUAL MANDARIN & ENGLISH SUPPORT
我可以用中英文双语教学,特别适合刚来到澳洲,或正在适应澳洲英语教学体系的学生。
As someone from a Chinese migrant background, I understand that students may have strong ideas but struggle to express them using the analytical and academic language expected at school.
Where helpful, I can explain difficult concepts in Mandarin before helping students develop those ideas into clear and sophisticated English.
🌟TEXTUAL ANALYSIS & ESSAY WRITING
One of my main focuses is helping students understand the difference between describing what happens in a text and analysing how meaning is created.
We work on:
• Understanding essay and comprehension questions
• Developing clear and sophisticated thesis statements
• Constructing strong topic sentences
• Selecting relevant quotes and techniques
• Connecting technique → evidence → analysis → broader idea
• Moving beyond plot retelling
• Improving expression and sentence structure
• Linking analysis directly back to the question
• Adapting prepared essays to unfamiliar questions
Rather than simply telling a student to “analyse more”, I show them what stronger analysis looks like and how to construct it themselves.
🌟CREATIVE & DISCURSIVE WRITING
Many students understand advice such as “show, don’t tell” in theory but struggle to apply it.
We work on:
• Balancing description with internal reflection
• Using imagery, motifs and symbolism purposefully
• Developing structure, pacing and changes in perspective
• Showing emotion through actions, setting and sensory detail
• Improving expression without overwriting
• Adapting prepared writing to different stimuli
I also provide support for discursive, persuasive and reflective writing.
🌟EXAM & ASSESSMENT PREPARATION
Students can work with me on:
• Unpacking rubrics and difficult questions
• Short-answer comprehension
• Timed essay practice
• Adapting essays under exam conditions
• Trial and HSC-style questions
• Identifying where marks are being lost and how to improve
🌟DETAILED MARKING & FEEDBACK
My lessons are encouraging, but I also maintain clear academic expectations.
When marking work, I first identify what the student has done successfully, so they understand which skills are already working. I then provide specific areas for improvement and explain how to fix them, rather than leaving vague comments such as “analyse more” or “improve expression”.
I believe every achievement should be recognised, whether that means receiving a Band 6, improving by five marks, finally understanding analysis, or completing a strong piece of writing independently.
🌟RESOURCES PROVIDED
Depending on the course and prescribed text, students may receive:
• HSC and Preliminary notes
• A-range exemplar essays and model responses
• Quote and technique analysis
• Essay plans and practice questions
• Creative and discursive exemplars
• Detailed annotated feedback and revision resources
🌟MY OWN EXPERIENCE
I also understand what it feels like to struggle with English.
I went from receiving 65% in my Year 10 English final examination to achieving 87.5% in my first English Extension 1 assessment, ranking 4th internally, and 90% in a Year 11 English Advanced assessment, ranking 8th internally.
Because improvement did not happen automatically for me, I had to learn how to analyse, structure arguments, develop ideas and write with greater sophistication. That experience now shapes the way I teach.
If something does not make sense, we break it down until it does.
