📘PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Having genuinely attended all my tutoring (as a highschool student) in Year 11 and Year 12 with the exception of a month of once-a-week lessons in Year 6 and Year 10, I know what it is like to be surrounded by competitive peers who have already accelerated a lot of their learning for a decade of their childhood at tutoring centres for six-eight hour sessions, and I know how to circumvent this without compromising results and as well as without quashing the natural desire to 'know about things'. I care about students. I am patient, having tutored students of various academic capabilities.
🧭 HOW I TEACH
My goal is to help the student appreciate the beauty of maths and get their best academic results along the way. I use the Polya pedagogy: a socratic style of question-and-discussion that forces students to really think, and therefore genuinely understand the material. Unlike the standard way of teaching, I introduce the question before I introduce its underlying theory in the same fashion as the AOPS founder and pedagogue, Richard Ruscyzk, does - not the other way around; the purpose of this is to frame mathematics as a process of discovery, not rote-learning. The result is that the student is more engaged, and is therefore more willing to independently discipline themselves in exam preparation, and thus will get better marks. I was fortunate enough to have a teacher who taught that to me, and I hope to pass it on.
"Your problem may be modest, but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive faculties, and if you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery.” - Polya
LESSON STRUCTURE🧩
What happens in the Lesson:
- detailed corrections and feedback for the student's working for questions from last week’s homework.
- teaching new material, which covers topics that are crucial for a good year 11-12 foundation but are often entirely neglected at school.
- teaching small, overlooked nuances and theoretical details required to get that band 6.
- walking through all levels of example questions (standard -> challenging)
What happens outside the Lesson:
- weekly Revision test (for group classes only), pertaining to material from two weeks ago to strengthen memory recall
- extensive list of exam revision resources such as question banks organised by topic, as well as past papers
- carefully curated set of homework questions, which is comprised of a diverse array of problems (ranging from simple to hard) from excellent sources, not mindless and repetitive exercises.
- serious, dedicated 24/7 homework help via email or text, no grudges
