About
Hi, I have been in education for over 30 years and have taught English across all year levels. I have taught in single-sex and co-ed schools, in both the public and private education sector.
Students enjoy my classes because I have the ability to relate to them, I love my subject area, and therefore teach with passion and conviction.
I have always loved writing and have commenced my first book...which I hope to publish soon!
English, literature, poetry, prose, essay writing...these are things I enjoy immensely, hence I am able to inject great enthusiasm into subjects that don't always inspire young people!
I have also been a leader in education (Principal, Head of Senior Campus, DP, Head of Wellbeing, House Leader, Head of English...) and so I understand the concept of leadership and can inspire young people to tap into their own leadership qualities. This helps enormously in the tutoring process because students become more confident and feel empowered in terms of the learning process...it becomes something that is done "with them" rather than "to them". It is important to "teach them how to fish" rather than just give them a fish for the day!
I am, and have always been, a passionate and committed educator with a knack for engaging students in their learning...regardless of the subject!
I also work as a 'Life Coach', mostly with teens, and so I understand their challenges and how a lack of confidence can be so debilitating. Once we build confidence, the learning process can open up and the young person begins to believe in their own abilities. All young people have strengths and talents which I will endeavour to uncover as part of the tutoring process. I don't believe we can teach effectively by just teaching 'subjects'...we need to teach the young person more holistically in order to create real and sustainable change in their ability to learn.
I also work as a keynote speaker, so I am able to assist students with public speaking tasks.
In my previous roles in schools, I worked extensively with young people on study skills & stress management. These are also vital areas to develop in order to enhance the learning process. If students are tired, stressed and not employing study skills in keeping with their preferred learning styles, they are not likely to retain information or process material effectively.
My teaching style is interactive and I endeavour to ask the right questions in order for the young person to discover the "right" answers. I do not rely on a pedagogical style that requires the mere memorisation of content. To fully embed an understanding of the material being taught, students need to develop their thinking skills so that they can analyse, synthesise and formulate clear ideas when responding to complex questions.
I look forward to working with more and more young people so that I can help unlock their vast potential and lead a happy life fuelled by a self-belief and confidence that they can pursue their dreams!
