About

⚫ I SPECIALISE IN PREPARING STUDENTS FOR HSC ENGLISH: YR10, YR11 and YR12 ⚫ Hi there, I'm Dr Mitch Harper, the Director of Perfect Prose. I’m a private tutor with more than 10 years’ experience teaching HSC English (both privately and at écriture in Chatswood). Over the years, I’ve developed a thorough understanding of the HSC syllabus and prescribed texts, come to know exactly what HSC markers look for, and have taught students from the top schools in Sydney (see list below). All in all, I’ve helped 200+ students achieve high results in English, from scoring Band 6s to attaining a state rank. In my undergrad, I studied courses on philosophy, literature and creative writing, and afterwards received a dual-PhD in philosophy from UNSW and Université Paris Nantarre. I’ve taught classes on philosophy and writing at both these institutions and presented my research at national and international conferences in Sydney, Melbourne, London, Istanbul, Paris and Manipal. In this way, I bring a depth of knowledge on English and World literature, literary analysis and theory, and essay and creative writing. I’ve been commended for my ability to breakdown difficult concepts and ideas, explain the fundamental themes underpinning texts, and articulate exactly what needs to be included in essays to score 20/20. With a passion for creative writing, I also teach how to write engaging and sophisticated creative, discursive and persuasive pieces—which, from what I’ve seen, hasn’t been adequately taught in school. I provide personalised lessons based around the texts my students are studying and their upcoming assessments and exams. ⭐ MY GUIDING PRINCIPLES ⭐ ⚫ SUCCESS IS PERSONAL Your personal academic goals are the core focus, so it’s imperative you understand what success means for you. Perhaps English is your strongest subject and you want to ace it, perhaps it’s your weakest subject but you need a Band 6 for a particular ATAR mark, or perhaps you just want to make sense of the madness and do your best. Either way, I’ll provide an easy-to-follow blueprint that has allowed past students to achieve everything from a Band 6 to a state rank. ⚫ COMPREHENSION THROUGH WRITING It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve read the text, how many articles you’ve read about the text, or whether the author of the text appeared to you in a dream like some ancient Muse and explained its absolute meaning. It all comes down to how well you can pin those ideas swirling around your head onto the page. I therefore place a strong emphasis on teaching academic and creative writing, which will help you express your ideas with confidence and precision. ⚫ FEEDBACK MAKES PERFECT No matter how much time and effort you’ve put into something, the brutal truth is that practice alone does not make perfect. Rather, feedback makes perfect. I ensure that the work you put in yields the best results by providing unlimited feedback and marking, which has dramatically improved my students’ writing, assessment marks and exam performances. ⚫ DEVELOPING A GROWTH MINDSET Without a doubt, senior English can be tough. But time and time again I’ve witnessed students exceed their goals by remaining focused, persistent and consistent. Through targeted feedback and guided learning, I’ll invite you to develop a growth mindset and embrace challenges, see mistakes as valuable lessons, view effort as a path to mastery and work towards continuous improvement. 🌐 You can Google my tutoring business by searching Perfect Prose Sydney If you'd like to commence English tuition, please get in touch by phone or email to discuss my availabilities. Mitch is an amazing teacher. I couldn’t have done so well for the HSC without his help. I ended up getting a 95 for English (94 internal and 96 external), which I thought was near impossible! Mitch explained the texts I studied thoroughly, provided easy to understand feedback and overall helped me improve my writing, analysis and ability to fully address the question. I was so well prepared for the HSC that even two weeks out I wasn’t stressed. A huge thanks!!!

Dr Mitch was a superb help for my son’s result in the 2024 HSC. He was very good to deal with. We tried a few private tutors before but Nick never quite hit it off with them. When he started with Dr Mitch my son’s confidence in English really grew. Dr Mitch taught Nick all the fundamentals and explained exactly what Nick needed to do to improve both his analysis and comprehension. Dr Mitch really helped improve Nick’s essays and his exam performance.

An amazing tutor. I went to some other tutoring centres before Mitch but I didn’t find them helpful at all. Mitch is a sharpshooter and showed me exactly what I needed to do to get the grades. Thanks Mitch, can’t thank you enough!

Mitch was such a big help! Me and a friend had a small group class with him for year 12. Mitch was very encouraging and gave clear guidance on what we needed to do to increase our marks and get in the top band. He was very knowledgeable about the texts we studied, was always encouraging and gave plenty of feedback on our essays. I ended up scoring 94 and my friend got something similar, which was amazing because English was far from our best subject.

Dr Harper was a huge help for Advanced and Extension English. He seemed to know everything about the texts I studied in year 11 and year 12. He made everything so relatable, understandable and engaging. I actually came to really appreciate and enjoy all the texts we studied. He was very clear on what I needed to include in my practice essays, he gave heaps of tips about how to adapt them to exam questions and he always gave feedback. He also provided a lot of helpful suggestions for my extension I comparative texts and really helped me grasp all the central Mindscapes ideas. And finally, he completely saved my arse with Mod C by thoroughly explaining how to write creative and discursive responses. Dr Harper’s an amazing tutor and I highly recommend him.

Dr Mitch Harper tutored both my son and daughter for the HSC. He was highly recommended by a friend, and I’m so glad we discovered him, because Mark and Jasmine really loved working with him. It was through the Covid years, so I was particularly nervous about whether they’d get enough support from school -- and not to mention, English was never their strong suit. I could hear how engaged my kids were whenever they had online lessons from home and they always raved about how great a teacher he was. Mitch was always willing to provide feedback on how Mark and Jasmine were progressing, and I always felt like I was dealing with someone who was professional and passionate. Mark and Jasmine both scored in the top band and got into the Uni courses they wanted. Thanks so much Mitch!

Mitch is the best tutor! He always gave clear direction on what I needed to write about. Mitch has a great way of making difficult ideas understandable and he’s very engaging. He was always prompt with feedback (unlike my teacher) and I would’ve been screwed without his assistance. I couldn’t recommend him enough! If you need an awesome tutor, look no further! Just don’t call him sir - haha.

I was tutored by Mitch from year 10 until the HSC in 2023. He’s very knowledgeable and engaging, and he really helped develop my writing and analysis. By the time I got to year 12, I knew what I needed to include in my practice essays and understood how to adapt them to the question. Mitch gave me ample feedback and he’s incredibly patient and encouraging. I ended up getting a 93 for English overall and I couldn’t have been happier.

Mitch is an awesome tutor! I always struggled with English and never felt that I knew exactly what was expected. But Mitch has a very clear way of explaining things and after just a couple of lessons, everything started to click. He showed me what I needed to include in my essays and taught me how to write creatives and discursive for Mod C. He was so generous with his time and gave me a lot of feedback, which really helped, as I ended up getting a Band 6 for advanced. I can’t recommend him enough!
