About

Hi, my name is Samuel and I am a student at Monash University studying Master of Teaching (Primary & Secondary) with chemistry as my secondary teaching method. Previously, I completed a Bachelor of Science at Charles Sturt University in analytical chemistry and plant biology, obtaining high distinction for each unit and winning the University Undergraduate Medal. I even had the opportunity to conduct my own research project on phytochemistry in my final semester, investigating the extraction of bioactive compounds from seeds of black cumin - a medicinal plant. I have almost three years of VCE Chemistry tutoring experience (Units 1-4) and have worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds, including special needs. This has helped me gain knowledge of the many misconceptions students may have about different topics. I recognize that chemistry can be a very challenging and intimidating subject for many people. I believe that tutoring is not just going over the notes and a few questions; it should be a learning experience in which the student is comfortable to explore concepts, ask questions and exchange their understanding with the tutor. In each session, I help students bridge gaps in their knowledge, see connections between what they're studying at school and the real-world around them, and gain a thorough understanding of the content by explaining concepts in a way that they can more easily understand and apply. Finally, I have a genuine passion for chemistry (particularly plant biochemistry) and want all of my students to see that chemistry is an intrinsically interesting subject with many important applications to our lives! I have completed a Bachelor of Science in analytical chemistry and plant biology, and received four Executive Dean's Awards, high distinction on all units, and the University Undergraduate Medal for outstanding academic performance. I am currently undertaking Master of Teaching (Primary & Secondary) at Monash University with chemistry as my secondary teaching method. I also undertook a Diploma of Music at SAE Institute (Melbourne) after my BSc but before starting MTeach.
