Iโ€™m Josh, a 2023 graduate from North Sydney Boys High School (ranked 1st in NSW 2023) and Medical Student at the University of New South Wales, the most in-demand undergraduate course. Having achieved a 99.90 ATAR and excellent results in standard HSC courses, external aptitude tests, and leadership activities, as well as my first choice of undergraduate medicine in each state I applied to, I feel that I am well placed to offer you or your child (from Year 7 to Year 12) a unique and highly individualised learning journey. ๐Ÿชช My academic qualifications include an ATAR of 99.90 (one step away from the highest possible ATAR), a high-99th percentile UCAT ๐Ÿฉบ score of 3460, a perfect LAT ๐Ÿ“‘ score of 100, and a state ranking in accelerated IPT ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ. ๐ŸŽ“ I am currently a UNSW All-Rounder Scholar for the BMedMD (one of a very select group of students studying medicine on a per-annum scholarship). I was also awarded both the University of Sydney Chancellor's Award and the University of New South Wales' Scientia Scholarship in recognition of my outstanding academic achievements and dedication to extracurricular commitments, in addition to undergraduate med offers at 4 of the best universities in Australia. ๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ My external HSC marks are as follows: English Advanced: 97/100 English Extension 1: 48/50 Maths Advanced: 99/100 Maths Extension: 49/50 Biology: 96/100 Information Processes and Technology: 97/100 Legal Studies: 95/100 ๐Ÿซ My internal HSC ranks are as follows: English Advanced: 7th (97% average) English Extension 1: 6th (97% average) Maths Advanced: 3rd (95% average) Biology: 2nd (88% average) Legal Studies: 1st (99% average) Information Processes and Technology: 1st (Accelerated HSC Course) ๐Ÿ† I also received the NSW Minister for Education's Award for Excellence in Student Achievement, the highest possible commendation awarded by the Deputy Premier for all-round excellence in academics, leadership, volunteering, and extracurricular activities in service to the school and the community, in addition to countless other external events and achievements I was involved in. ๐Ÿ’ผ I work as a professional debating and speaking competition adjudicator for the NSW Department of Education, and volunteer at the UNSW Museum of Human Disease and Anatomy as a tutor/guide for HSC Biology students. I have had prior experience working in tutoring centres for HSC subjects and UCAT, including roles which required interstate travel and large classes. ๐Ÿ˜Ž What differentiates me from other tutors with similar results and commendations is my pedagogical philosophy, which revolves around finding the perfect balance between guidance and self-directed learning; too often, students are either overly spoon-fed by doting teachers or tutors and lack the motivation and independent thinking skills to achieve success in their own pursuits, or left overwhelmed by a vast quantity of studying material and resources available in school and online without any structure or direction on how to fully take advantage of this information overload! In my lessons, I will use a 3-step model to ensure efficient and thorough retention of information and content: identify, personalise, and practice. Firstly, I will help the student identify their weaknesses in particular subject areas through examining teacher feedback, homework, and consultation. Too often, valuable feedback, a critical component of the learning process, is overlooked by students who are unable to process or implement recommendations. Secondly, I will then help the student in creating personalised techniques to proactively address these weaknesses and create strategies to prevent careless mistakes or key errors from being repeated in future assessments. Finally, I will ensure that the student is practicing applying these techniques through questions and revision sessions, as it is only through practicing the right things that perfection is made! By signing up with me, you will receive: ๐Ÿ“ Access to my extensive OneNote content notes (condensed, highlighted notes from the syllabus and most common textbooks, including hand-drawn diagrams and images) ๐Ÿ“œ Access to my extensive pre-exam notes (lists of the most common mistakes I and other students made to reinforce your confidence and increase your awareness immediately before the exam) ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ Unlimited online help outside of lesson times, including guidance with assignments and examinations โœ… Marking of draft assignments and personalised feedback on assessment task performance ๐Ÿ’ฐ Pricing: $90-100/hr for 1 on 1 sessions ($80-90/hr for online-only lessons) $50/hr for small group sessions (minimum 3, maximum 6 students) โ˜Ž๏ธ Contact: ๐Ÿ’ฌ Message me using this website ๐Ÿ“ฐ Read my feature article in SMH by searching "Senior Prefect Joshua Chan" ๐Ÿ“บ Watch my live TV interview with Sky News by searching "Joshua Chan Sky News" ๐ŸŽฅ Socials: joshuackchan (IG) /in/joshuackchan I am always open to negotiation regarding times, subjects and rates ๐Ÿ˜ - good luck with your high school journey, and I hope I can be a part of it!

Reviews

Joshua is a very thorough tutor who simplifies complex content into interesting analogies that aided my understanding of HSC Biology. I've learned a lot from him in a short amount of time and began to become more interested in the subject through his engaging teaching methods.

Josh's commitment to academic excellence is surpassed only by his approachability and his desire to help others. His extensive notes on each of his subjects is a testament to his unrivaled knowledge of the syllabus, a quality that complements his strong communication and critical thinking skills in a way that allows me to confidently recommend him as a tutor for you or your child. I was fortunate to have Josh's assistance in breaking down content and the syllabus, which enabled me to reach my full academic potential. Notably, the breadth and depth of Josh's knowledge positioned him to give valuable feedback on my work for short/extended response questions, a common area of weakness for many students. The accessible feedback enabled me to continually improve through my HSC year, allowing me to consolidate my knowledge across all of my subjects. Ultimately, his structured and systematic approach to learning is matched by none, and I'm happy to wholeheartedly recommend him as a tutor for any student.

Character references

Joshua was a very good tutor who quickly figured out what I didn't know and addressed it well. He was always approachable, friendly, on-time, and knew the syllabus content well. He really improved my marks and confidence, and I strongly recommend him if you're looking to learn anything, from starting a new subject from scratch or revising and practising before your exams.

I taught Joshua as a Head Teacher for 3 consecutive years (2021-2023). Throughout this time, he consistently demonstrated communication skill and conscientiousness as a high-order thinker, and exhibited remarkable aptitude and initiative in tackling the most challenging academic and leadership tasks with exceptional attention to detail and work ethic. Joshuaโ€™s was tirelessly dedicated to his work, achieving Dux in Y10, attaining a state ranking, and ranking 1st in Legal Studies, with outstanding (top-10) results in all his other subjects over the past 2 years. Joshua is a remarkable student with exceptional academic achievements, outstanding leadership skills, and a strong work ethic. He has shown his ability to take initiative in teaching and learning, and tackle challenging issues with patience. Joshua's attention to detail, communication skills, and motivation allow me to highly recommend him as a tutor who would undoubtedly make an outstanding contribution to you or your child's learning.
