HSC English intrigues me because every text studied has near-inexhaustible troves of meaning. Many prescribed texts have been explored for decades, if not centuries, at universities worldwide by researchers and students alike. My lack of experience will initially be compensated for with a discount. APPROACH English Advanced hinges on argument construction. Beyond the effect of a well-chosen piece of textual evidence, we’re asked to consider its broader meaning: what does it say about human nature? How does it address the issues of its context? Why is it still relevant to us? Combining the insights of the teachers and tutors who guided me through the HSC, I will introduce a reproducible, logical framework for the two key skills of essay writing: selecting good examples, and building sufficient depth of analysis. I’ll build my students’ experience through intentional and iterative assignment, review and improvement of written work. I’ll also teach and test the crucial skill of adapting this work to exam questions far earlier than is conventional, and will model responses to difficult previously examined questions with students’ own essay drafts. For narratives, resonant and emotive work is always very adaptable, but I will still provide guidelines for students to check when considering ideas. My students will learn to discover, explore and analyse compelling new interpretations and critical readings concisely in their essays. I’ll keep updating my knowledge; I aim to expose my students to the most provocative and comprehensive scholarship available. Pieces of research may even contradict one another; I’ll guide my students to find nuance where this occurs to construct a stronger argument. For the Module C creative task, I will provide and justify granular feedback, even word-by-word, to hone the expressive skill and consistency necessary to score full marks. I’ll also introduce concepts such as narrative scope and scale that will guide students to plan well-developed narratives within HSC word limits. Before the start of Year 11, I sampled significant portions of NESA’s Extension 2 Young Writers Showcase from to get an intuitive feel for the highest marker expectations. This intuition empowered me to explore an issue close to my heart in my Module C narrative, while exceeding the demands of the stimulus and course to earn full marks. I aim to empower my students to produce moving work that achieves a similar unification of academic excellence with personal passion. English is too often seen as a burden, but it should be an outlet to develop, interrogate and express a student’s thoughts, hopes and concerns for themselves, their loved ones, and the world. I’m also willing to support students in multimodals, having built confidence by studying drama for two years, before competing in a history debating team. This allowed me to present with confidence to an audience of over 100 people, then to judges, with my team at the 2022 International Genetically Engineered Machine competition in Paris. These experiences position me to help students overcome any nerves, and present their arguments with confidence to engage their audiences. KNOWN TOPICS: MODERN HISTORY - OPEN TO MORE! Core Study: Power and Authority in the Modern World Peace and Conflict: Conflict in the Pacific National Study: Russia and the Soviet Union Change in the Modern World: The Cultural Revolution to Tiananmen Square COMPLIMENTARY MODERN HISTORY FEEDBACK Consistent success in and personal passion for Modern History is built on exposure to books and academic papers that provide the granular data and historiography that top essays require. With ample access to the best resources, and a strong foundation in essay writing, any student can articulate a deep understanding of the historical events that shaped our world. Resolving conflicts between sources is a key skill that is often displayed in top essay responses; one historian poses a reliable view, another has a dissonant yet equally reliable view, and we come to a conclusion by considering the limitations of their perspectives. For my English Advanced students who also study Modern History, I will provide research suggestions, feedback and editing, at no extra cost.
