About

Chances are that you're on this site because you want your child to have access to the best possible future available. You want to afford them choices when it comes to university selection and course options. It could also be more short term - you want them to improve their confidence and enjoyment of English, a subject that they will have to take through to HSC. Regardless of which category you fall into, the underlying truth is that you want your child to build skills which will offer them success. I could promise you that your child will go straight to receiving A marks or band 6 outcomes, and I could guarantee this too. The primary issue is that in order to do that, I'd need to do the work for them, and I am thoroughly against this style of 'tutoring'. Your child needs to build skills in English through dedication and hard work, which can take time. This leads to my teaching philosophy: students learn best when they do their own work. As such, I view the role of a tutor as being to guide students towards reaching their full potential and maximising their results. This is done through giving them confidence, supporting them in understanding their individual areas of need, and offering strategies and scaffolds to address each of those key areas. I also think that students learn best when they're enjoying their studies, so I endeavour to build a strong rapport with each of the students I teach. That said, a strong foundation is also necessary for learning and I expect my students to complete their homework and come prepared for lessons. The NSW English curricula combine grammatical aptitude, understanding techniques, and analysis of purpose and meaning in texts. Mastery of the two former areas allows for the higher order process of the latter, analysis, to be tackled, and mastery comes with practice. If you've read this far, then we are likely to be a good fit for one another. Now, for the question of who I am: I am a NESA accredited high school English teacher with 17 years of international experience, including 4 years in NSW Australian high schools where I am currently working full time. In addition to having taught both first and second language English, I have also worked at the University of Sydney in their Centre for English teaching. I hold a bachelor in English Literature and Linguistics, a postgraduate degree in Linguistics, a CELTA certificate as well as a postgraduate certificate in high school education, for which I received a cum laude distinction. I am also trained in Gerric's Mini-Coge, a certificate specifically geared towards supporting high potential and gifted students. In addition, I have studied and taught Philosophy, an extremely useful tool for unpacking the underlying ideas on which to base creative compositions in the NSW English curricula. My sub-major in Psychology is also a useful tool for supporting students through mentorship. Furthermore, with the upcoming addition of grammar into the new K-12 syllabus, my training in linguistics and ESL methodology makes me a prime candidate for supporting both first and second language English students in this transition. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further queries. Limited places are available.

Reviews

I wish we knew Lauren when our first daughter gave her HSC. She helped our second one in the middle of school year with her EAL/D. Having English as a second language can be difficult but Lauren helped our daughter thrive and guided her into achieving a desirable score.

Character references

I’ve known Lauren since 2014, when we met as colleagues, teaching English. Being multilingual, and with a background in Linguistics and English, Lauren has an intense interest in the technicalities of the language as well as Literature. Her real passion is Education: making the subject engaging and accessible to her students and supporting them to achieve their goals. 17 years of results, speak for themselves.
