About
I am a secondary teacher with 25 years of tutoring and teaching experience working in private practice and in Independent and Catholic Secondary Schools (I am registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching). I specialise in the area of Learning Diversity and have tutored students ranging from Foundation to Year 12 in subjects including English (F-12), Maths (yr4-8), Science, Humanities, Psychology and Health and Human Development. I also work with students to build core literacy skills such as reading, spelling and writing. I have experience working with students with additional learning needs as well as students requiring enrichment.
The unique needs of each individual are central to my approach to teaching and I collaborate with students and parents to develop goals and consider the individual's areas of strength and challenge, drawing upon a variety of strategies to best suit the student. Establishing a rapport with students early on is key to developing their confidence, self-esteem and motivation and for them to get the most out of each session. Tutoring sessions are individualised and are usually tailored to align with learning at school. Our focus is often on skill building, developing understanding and strategies, as well as study habits, organisation and revision skills with the aim to transfer these for use at home and school.
I have extensive experience teaching students with a broad range of learning needs including students with ADHD, Specific Learning Disorders, Anxiety, Autism and Developmental Language Disorder and differentiate my tutoring to meet the needs of each individual. I am familiar with the terminology used in specialist reports and thoughtfully adjust the strategies I use, with the aim to get the best out of each student. I am reliable and offer a high level of dedication.
Outside of teaching, I love film and literature, exploring the great outdoors, enjoying food and spending quality time with family and friends (including the furry kind!). I am interested in mental health and wellbeing and am often immersed in a creative project in the garden or home to maintain a positive work/life balance. I am a passionate supporter of my own children and on weekends can often be found cheering on the side lines of a soccer match or in the audience at a dance competition.

Jo has helped me improve with my education in so many different ways. She let me learn at my own pace and gave me extra support on subjects for homework. If you're looking for a tutor or/and out of school educational support, I would recommend Jo D any day.
