About

99.90 ATAR; 4 state ranks; 4 prizes at Sydney Grammar in Year 12 including Wallach Memorial Prize (Captain of the School); HSC All Rounder; Distinguished Achiever in 12 units; 2024 Vice President of Wright Hall ANU Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m an eager and experienced tutor of English, Latin, Classical Greek, and French. I absolutely loved these subjects at high school, and I seek to set my tutees up for academic success while preserving an appreciation for the majesty and sophistication of the texts we study. My four 2023 HSC students all performed excellently. I taught John Wu (review below) Latin and English; he got Band 6s in both and came 5th in state in Latin Extension. Another student, whom I taught Latin (review below) got a Band 6. A third student, who I taught English, got a Band 6. Finally, my Greek student Chanuka Mayadunne got top bands in Greek Continuers and Extension. All four students were All Rounders! I also have experience teaching kids in Years 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11. In English, I show you how to convert understanding of the text, which your teachers give you, into clear and relevant essay theses. I provide notes, quotes, and detailed exam advice, and I give feedback timed short responses and essay plans. I am flexible: also willing to go through parts of texts that need work, help with homework, mark written responses, or anything you need. In Latin and Greek, my focus is reading. Reading far beyond the curriculum was how I achieved HSC success, and I seek to instill in my tutees a habit of reading. To this end, I bring challenging but doable passages, which you translate with my help, and we note relevant grammar, vocab, and context points. I also provide homework reading if you’re up for it. Like in English, I am flexible: I am also happy to help with seen passages, exam technique, grammar revision, and anything else. I dropped French in my final year, but I was a top student and I have kept the language up. I received the French prize at Grammar in 2018, 2019, and 2020 (prizes were not awarded in 2021). In the classics I read my way to success; in French I listened my way there. I spent much of my free time consuming French in the form of music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and YouTube. I even performed French rap at the school rock concert in 2021 and 2022. Given I didn’t take HSC French, I would not be comfortable tutoring it. However, I offer French tutoring, which mainly consists of conversation and listening tasks, to all other ages. I’m happy to discuss discounts for online lessons and for pre-HSC students. I graduated from Sydney Grammar in 2022, and am studying Arts/Law at ANU. At Grammar and at ANU, I juggled a lot - sports, music, chess, clubs, and more - with academics. This can be difficult, and I want to help you succeed as I did.

Reviews

I was tutored by Patrick during my HSC year in advanced English and found his sessions extremely helpful. I went from receiving consistent B range marks to full marks in my responses after discussing nuanced concepts about my texts that went beyond the simple interpretations most students would write about. Patrick kept the sessions fresh and enjoyable, making it much easier to appreciate the texts. I would highly recommend Patrick as an English tutor for any student wishing to develop an elaborate understanding of their hsc texts which will provide unique responses that stand out to the marker.

Patrick has a superb ability to teach difficult subjects. His thinking is unique: he can think outside the box and come up with highly intelligent and genuinely thought provoking responses to any English essay or Classics commentary question. He is also adept at showing his thought process, which no doubt benefits the student massively. Patrick taught me Classical Greek, English Advanced and Classical Greek Extension, my hardest subjects. His passion for great works Plato, Homer, and Orwell animate his lessons. He does not teach to the test, but encourages his students to appreciate the texts - for example, I loved learning “scansion”- reading the Odyssey in the same meter as the bards of 3000 years ago- which made the whole subject much more enjoyable, and certainly increased my marks. Furthermore, I appreciated his emphasis on constant unseen practice, the hardest part of Classics. Thanks to Patrick's help I got Band 6’s in Classical Greek Extension and Continuers, helping me achieve the All Rounder award.

I got Patrick as a tutor at the start of Year 12. Before he was my tutor, I was struggling significantly in latin in all aspects, especially unseen translation. However, after only a few months with Patrick, he was able to significantly improve my understanding of the Latin language in all aspects. His helpful guidance online help are add-ons to his already impressive teaching ability, as he is able to break down the complexities and nuances of Latin and explain it in an understandable manner. This combined with his enthusiasm for the language make lessons not only informative and beneficial, but also engaging. Patrick has also tutored me for a few months in the leadup to the HSC. He has not only given me tips that have helped sharpen my understanding of my prescribed texts, but more importantly, he has helped me improve my essay writing significantly, giving advice on how to structure paragraphs, and most importantly, how to approach a question and address it in a sophisticated manner.

Patrick has a highly intelligent method of teaching, personalised for each student’s needs accordingly. Over the course of my study with him, his advice to constantly read beyond the syllabus was essential to my improvement in both Latin unseens and commentary. He clarifies grammatical and vocabulary queries where needed, and isn’t afraid to challenge the student with tricky passages, giving clues to the right answer instead of just revealing it. He always comes to the lesson prompt and well prepared. Overall, he has ignited a love for the language for me, which I believe was the key to succeeding at an HSC level.
