I'm Donny, a UQ medical student who has been teaching for about 4 years as part of Science Ready. Having had most of my students recently graduate (sadly...), I'm now opening up intake for 2026!

I'm happy to only charge for the first lesson if you wish to continue with me. However, payment for the trial lesson still must be made in advance. It will be refunded if you choose not to continue.
I appreciate that every student and parent feels hesitant to start with a new tutor - there is always the question of what if they're crap and I waste money on a useless lesson? Firstly, ouch! Secondly, that's fair.
However, from my perspective, it is impractical for me to provide free trials. There are a couple of inquiries every week or two and I cannot accommodate everyone. Additionally, there are students who ask for one free lesson just so they can get help with an assignment, and then disappear for the rest of eternity.

Yes, it is higher than most private tutors, and this is because I offer specialist help with many subjects. Many students often have 1 tutor for English, another for Chemistry and another for Physics. The total cost of these three tutors is for sure significantly higher than my rate. I pride myself on offering a complete academic solution that covers all bases.
Importantly, many of my students have actually SAVED money in the long run whilst IMPROVING their marks after discontinuing with their other tutors.
I know this sounds arrogant, but it's the truth. I don't see the point of having multiple tutors because:
a. It's a logistical nightmare
b. It is very unlikely that all of them are actually helpful
c. You have NO free time or leftover energy for self-study

Historically, I've set a limit of 5 students each year. This was to ensure that I can adequately help all of my students without stressing myself out.

No. This is a hard and fast rule. Main reasons are:
a. I donโt know you and will have to assume that you have the potential to submit my pieces of work as your own or plagiarise parts of it in a written exam. This is incredibly unfair to other students.
b. My HSC pieces are under the IP rights of NESA, and it is illegal to distribute these.

The nature of my lessons will differ depending on your needs, and I will always encourage you to communicate what is and isnโt working for you and to evolve our lessons together. Generally, there are 3 types of students that Iโve helped out:
Group A โ All-round high-achievers
Students who are incredibly high-achieving already but constantly have niche/complex questions that they need help with to deepen their knowledge even further. These students usually come with a list of questions theyโve accumulated for discussion in each lesson. Generally, we donโt have weekly lessons as they wonโt have a long list every week. Instead, we have lessons whenever they need one.
Group B โ Students who are high-achieving in most subjects but have weaknesses in other subjects.
Most of these students excel in STEM but feel completely lost when it comes to English.
This is usually because English isnโt taught with the same clear rationale that STEM subjects are. For example, English teachers often say โwrite it this wayโ without explaining why they want you to do this, or tell you to โimprove your analysisโ without showing you how or what specifically needs to change. Naturally, this becomes frustrating and discouraging for students. Indeed, I disliked 80% of my English teachers in high school. One of them literally told me to "write more simply" and then gave an "exemplar essay" that sounded like the writer was a 19th-century poet.
I promise, if you come to me for English, I will ALWAYS explain the rationale behind the way I want you to write AND provide clear examples so you can see exactly what I mean.
There should be NO ambiguity, confusion or worry when it comes to learning English. I genuinely believe that the way English is taught in most high schools is incredibly toxic and gives students so much unnecessary stress...
Group C โ High-effort students who consistently fall short of their goals
These students rightfully feel that their marks arenโt reflecting their efforts and feel frustrated or unsure about how to proceed. I find that these students need help in any or all of these 3 areas:
1. They have slight misconceptions/misunderstandings with the content, or do not learn about the nuances of the content until they are hit with a question that tests these nuances in the real exam.
2. They don't have a reliable way of creating structured, detailed responses and thus lose marks for not hitting points in the marking criteria
3. They are revising low-yield topics/details and not putting their effort into the correct places.
