About

Hi there! I'm Julia - a Y11 & 12 HSC Biology Specialist with 8+ years of teaching experience who is committed to help you get the marks, build confidence & establish good study habits. ✅ What I can do for you I am a science tutor specialist for HSC Biology - Year 11 & 12 (focusing on the new syllabus) and junior science across Years 7 to 10. I offer tutoring for both individual or group and use all my own personalised topic notebooks which can be tailored to follow the teaching schedule specific to the student’s school curriculum. I can tutor face-to-face (at the student’s place or local library - if within the South West Sydney or Strathfield/North Strathfield/Concord area) or online via Zoom, depending on the student’s availability & convenience. 👩‍🏫 My teaching approach Collaborative learning is the proven success formula I use for helping guide students to understand even the most complex stuff! Tutoring shouldn’t just be a one-way highway of only knowledge sharing from tutor to student. For me, learning is an active, constructive process: to learn new information, ideas or skills, you have to work engage with the content in purposeful & interactive ways that match the student’s learning style e.g. whether via verbal discussion, whiteboard mind mapping or Kahoot quizzes. With 7+ years of teaching experience in collaborative classrooms, I’ve seen first hand the success my students have had as they actively work with the course material to go beyond memorising theory and develop their own independent thinking. ✍️Typical Lesson breakdown Lessons are typically 1 H 30 MINS however I’m happy to accommodate to the preferences of the student (either for longer or shorter sessions). The general teaching structure of my lessons are: 1. Introduction & Refresher - 10 min We discuss what’s working well, what’s tricky and the focus for the week as well as review the prior week to reinforce learning. 2. Theory Explainer & Discussion - 40 min We take a deep dive into the learning topic, breaking up the material so that it is easy to understand with step-by-step guidance. 3. Put-Into-Practice - 30 min We apply the theory we learn to exam—style questions together. Insightful feedback on answers are provided to all questions to help build exam technique and confidence. 4. Recap & Questions - 10 min
We summarise the key takeaways for the lesson and create a plan of next steps to continue the learning independently for the rest of the week. Opportunity to ask questions you are unsure of to clarify your understanding. 🤓 About me I’ve been a private tutor for over 7 years, teaching students from across Years 7 to 12. I've worked as a head science tutor at two tutoring centres, running small collaborative classrooms as well as leading training development by creating my own teaching resources to personalise to my students' needs. I started tutoring because I'm passionate about making a positive difference to students in their learning journey. My joy is getting to see students find their confidence recognising their improvements overtime as they learn to become well-rounded, independent & strong thinkers. I draw from my own experiences of having felt lost and confused in my high school learning journey. It was largely due to the powerful guidance and help I received from tutoring that I became a HSC All-Rounder and DUX of my high school (having ranked 1st internally for 5 subjects - Biology, Earth & Environmental Science, English Advanced, Legal Studies & Ancient History). Since then I have tutored over 50+ students in HSC Science & English - 80% of whom have gone on to achieve Band 6 results. Recently, I completed a Bachelor of Commerce and Arts at the University of Sydney and am now currently working as a strategy management consultant in the tech space. 💎 Rates Rates for one-on-one tutoring - Y7 to 10 Science: $50/hr - Y11 & 12 HSC Biology: $60/hr Rates for groups (minimum 2 students) - Y7 to 10 Science: $40/hr per student - Y11 & 12 HSC Biology: $40/hr per student Please do contact me using the message function and ask if you're interested in knowing more. I was literally coming last in Biology at the start of Year 11. Like bottom of my grade. I didn't even think tutoring would help at that point but my mum basically made me try it. Julia never made me feel dumb for not getting things. She just started from where I was and we went from there. She works out how you learn and actually teaches you that way which sounds obvious but no one had really done that for me before. A few months in I started actually understanding what was going on in class. My assessment marks kept going up and by the end of the year I finished in the top 5 of my cohort. I went from wanting to drop the subject to being excited for Year 12 Bio. Still kind of shocked honestly. Julia is the reason for that.

I came to Julia completely lost in Year 12 Bio. Like genuinely had no idea what was going on with the new syllabus and was pretty stressed about it. A friend recommended her and it was honestly the best decision I made that whole year. She explains things in a way that actually makes sense. Nothing feels overcomplicated and she's really patient if you need her to go over something again. Her notes are so good too, way more useful than anything from school. What I liked most was that lessons didn't feel like being lectured at. We'd work through things together, do past exam questions, go over what I got wrong and why. I stopped just memorising dot points and started actually understanding the content which made a massive difference come exam time. She also just genuinely cares about how you're going. She'd remember what I was struggling with from the week before and always checked in on how I was feeling about everything. That kind of support really matters when you're stressed in Year 12. I ended up getting a Band 6 which I honestly didn't think was possible when I first started with her. If you're doing HSC Biology and feeling behind or just want to do better, go to Julia. She will actually get you there.
