About
Hi! I'm Elijah, and for the duration of my degree (majoring in Classics and minoring in Ancient World Studies) I'm tutoring Latin in order to aid students who'd like to improve and to spread my passion for the language.
I like to give my students freedom in how they study, and so I prefer to let them decide how much work they do outside of lessons in regards to my tutoring: beyond lessons I can provide passages to translate, last-minute advice, general explanations, and so on. I like to engage students and give them a taste of something different, so I'm more likely to pick passages from slightly more obscure authors who might write in a slightly more difficult style than might be found in schoolwork. I don't like adapting or editing texts for difficulty, but I'll provide explanations for things I don't expect students to know. For younger students who might not be able to translate proper Latin texts I can write exercises (given notice) and teach according to the CLC (Cambridge Latin Course), but see below.
I started professionally tutoring a few students near the start of 2022, although I have much more experience translating: my document for completed works is over 90,000 words long, including:
- Aeneid books 6 & 7
- Vergil's, Calpurnius Siculus', and Nemesianus' Eclogues
- Horace's Odes book 2
- Iliad books 3, 6, and 11
- a few other works from various authors in both Latin and Greek
My document for extracts and random things I've translated is over 170,000 words; from other languages I've translated Dante's Divine Comedy, the Bhagavad Gita, and many other small extracts (as of Nov. 2023). Having done all Latin undergraduate classes, I'm currently studying Ancient Greek and Egyptian at uni, and in my own time I've been delving into old Italian, Sanskrit, old Occitan, and German.
I have a preference for students in VCE (or adulthood - you never know), but I am perfectly willing to tutor students below that level: the only difference is that at lower year levels they are generally using a textbook, which limits my ability to provide appropriately tailored assistance (beyond helping with translations and grammatical explanations).
I tutor online (zoom or discord), and I'm flexible with my lesson timing: I'm not that fussed about charging for a bit of overtime, and I can hold lessons most evenings/nights as well as weekends.
