Hello, my name is Thanuja Muthumala and I am a fully registered secondary teacher with the Queensland College of Teacher and an External Assessment Marker. I specialise in qce senior chemistry. My approach to teaching has always been to cater to the students' needs by devising a plan with them on how to best assist them in achieving their personalised goals. For instance, because I understand that everyone learns through different means, I have tried multiple different techniques with my students. These include creating mind maps, conducting practise and warm-up questions for retrieval practise or regular brain dumps. During my years of tutoring, especially since the atar system came into place, I have been doing targeted revisions with my students. I have become very familiar with the syllabus document and have created revision material for each topic with different exam style questions. From, my experience as an External Assessment Marker, I am then able to give my students well constructed feedback on how to improve their responses in order to optimise the marks they receive. I have noticed this technique builds great confidence in my students, which was proved by the results they achieved. Since 2020, all my students have received above 45/50 in the external examination. In addition to this, I also provide assistance with the internal assessment. This includes assisting in assignments, such as the IA2 and IA3, ensuring they have included adequate chemistry principals and that the assignments reads well whilst meeting all required criteria. Similarly, for data test preparation, I do multiple practise tests under time conditions and work through the questions with my students, ensuring they understand what is expected of them as per the cognitive verb used. Again, the success of my methods has been proved to be efficient as this year (2022) all my year 12 students have received an A grade in their internal assessment.
