About

**99.95 (2020) Raw 44 Latin Tutoring** Please PM me or enquire about cheaper rates if money is an issue. **Latin Tutoring Experience** I now mainly exclusively tutor Latin, while balancing two part time jobs in retail and healthcare, music, sport, church, social and academic commitments. I have a broad experience in teaching Latin, teaching it from a beginner level, such as helping students to pick up the language, to VCE Unit 3/4 Level. I am well acquainted with all books of the Aeneid, which is the text studied in VCE Unit 4, and am highly proficient in all aspects of the language required for Latin unseens. I have a range of resources such as notes, practice questions and sample unseens. I have a depth of knowledge of the structure of both the Oxford and Cambridge Latin courses, having taught from both extensively I love what Latin has taught me, and did it because I’m passionate about language learning, not just for the scaling! I’m proficient in French and am currently studying German. I love history and seeing the connections between language and culture in a classical context. People often think that Latin is a dead language - but it’s not because it lives on through the modern languages it has evolved into and influenced, as well in religious culture and in scientific language! 2021 Experience **more than 300 hours experience** **taught Eng Lang, Methods, Latin on a regular basis** **taught Physics, Chemistry, Specialist on an irregular basis** **taught students across the secondary school year levesl (Year 8 to VCE Unit 3/4) **taught individual, small group and large group classes** **taught both face-to-face classes** **taught students across the school sectors (government, selective government, Catholic, indepedent) **Original Listing from January 2021** Hello there! I’m Josh and I’m pleased to be offering tutoring in 2021 for Units 3/4 and Units 1/2 Maths Methods, Units 3/4 and Units 1/2 Specialist Maths and Units 3/4 English Language. I will also be offering tutoring for students of any year level in Latin grammar and Latin unseens (+general advice on the Aeneid for Units 3/4). Furthermore, I can offer free resources, tutoring and just general advice on any of my other subjects: English (WOT, Queen + Ransom), Chemistry and Physics, and on the UCAT, to all of my students. As someone who myself didn’t undertake tutoring throughout high school and VCE (apart from Term 2 of Year 8 and Term 1 of Year 11), I bring originality to the table in terms of the methods in which I learnt the content of all my subjects, and my ability to convey my ideas eloquently and concisely. Simultaneously, I am receptive of any gaps in your understanding which may be the cause of your mistakes, tailoring my teaching to suit your individual needs. Furthermore, over Year 11 and 12, especially in this year of remote learning, I have gained broad experience in self-teaching. I have also constantly provided assistance to many of my peers in all of my subjects during Year 12 and indeed throughout high school. **About myself** I completed my VCE in 2020, graduating from Scotch College as a co-dux. Over my VCE I completed two subjects in Year 11 (2019) and five in Year 12 (2020), pursuing a diverse range of subjects which included two Englishes, two Maths, two Sciences and Latin. I was fortunate enough to have achieved the following results: • Raw score of 50 in Maths Methods (2019) • Raw score of 47 in English Language (scaled to 48.6) • Raw score of 46 in Physics (2019) • Raw scores of 44 in English, Latin (equal sixth in the state, scaled to 54) and Spesh (scaled to 53) • Raw score of 41 in Chem • a 96th percentile UCAT and 90th percentile SJT • an aggregate of 214.87 • an ATAR of 99.95, the maximum possible. Furthermore, all of my students will also receive free resources, help with questions and just general advice regarding any of the other subjects I completed regardless if I am tutoring them in that particular subject. **Credentials** *Teaching* My lessons will be versatile depending on your needs! However, the basic structure of my lessons will be as follows: • Methods and Spesh – I will be teaching you the most important aspects of the course, such that you can grasp the strong foundations required to perform well in these subjects. I will be providing you with sample and practice VCAA-style questions of all difficulties every lesson and for homework. I will also be teaching you how to maximise efficiency on the CAS. • Eng Lang – In Unit 3 I will go through with you, from the very beginning, all the essential ‘content’ that you should know and understand in a condensed fashion, before moving on to practice Section As and Section Bs in preparation for the SACs (and final exam). In Unit 4, I will go through with you the understanding of contemporary issues that is required to succeed, and explain the language features of each identity. For both units I will correct all your written work either during lessons or during the week, providing extensive feedback on how to improve. (*It is true that the 2020 Eng Lang Course was adjusted because of COVID-19. However, due to the nature of these sections I am completely capable of teaching these sections.) • Latin – I will answer any questions you may have on grammar and provide you with advice on how to ‘decode’ unseens in a logical fashion; I will provide advice on the Aeneid (Units 4) For all subjects I will provide you with mock SACs of the highest quality before your SACs. *Resources* As a student of mine, you will have full access to my elegantly presented notes I have myself compiled. My resources include: • Methods and Spesh – complete course notes with examples of VCAA-style questions of every difficulty, style and presentation, my bound reference (essentially notes condensed to the fundamentals), booklets of most difficult VCAA-style questions from the past 20 years, neat tricks for the CAS • Eng Lang – my complete set of comprehensive notes on Informal and Formal Language (Unit 3), Language and Identity (Unit 4) and Grammar and Metalanguage; my complete paragraph bank and very strong sample essays and ACs • Latin – complete grammar guide, written by myself, of everything that is necessary for translating Unseens for Latin in Units 3/4; a trove of practice unseens; general advice on the Aeneid • Physics – complete course notes, my exam cheat sheet (condensed course notes), my full mark EPI, and my high scoring responses to all types of ‘explain’ questions • Chem notes – complete course notes and condensed course notes for exam revision • I possess mock SACs created by myself adapted from those of my school (to suit the SAC of your specific school), and select difficult questions for all of my subjects. All notes are presented such that they can be understood extremely easily, because I value understandability and coherence very highly. To quote my absolutely legendary Year 10 Methods 1/2 Teacher, paraphrasing Einstein, ‘if you cannot explain a concept in such simple terms that a six year old understands it, you don’t understand it yourself’. These are here, however, just to complement my teaching by reminding you of the theory behind difficult concepts and the most important aspects of the course. *Support* Whether you are getting burnt-out and require motivation, or are going through some difficult times, you can count on my support at any time throughout the year. I will also be available to assist you with any questions outside of sessions, relating to the subjects I am tutoring, my other subjects (listed above), the UCAT, university admissions, university life, or anything else. Just message me! **Details about the sessions** • Unless otherwise requested, sessions will be 1 hour, every week • I am available to do them in person or over Zoom. I am located in the eastern suburbs but am happy to travel to the City / your location depending on where you live • Individual or group sessions are available, (please PM me for full rates and further details) • Group tutoring is available (preferred especially for the maths subjects), at a discounted rate – please PM me for details • I have a Working with Children check Whether you are vying for a 30, 40 or even a 50, I believe that I can help you achieve your goals whatever they are. Please drop a comment or PM me to enquire about further details or if you have any questions about Year 12 or the VCE. All the best with your studies in 2021!
