About

98.50 ATAR All-Rounder Academic Tutor/Coach 2026 Student Intake Hi! My name is Mia Ooi. I’m a second year Doctor of Medicine (MD) student at the University of Sydney and a First Class Honours Science graduate from Melbourne Uni. I graduated from Loreto Toorak with a 98.50 ATAR with a Raw 47 in English (Top 1%) and 40+ scores in all subjects, but my biggest achievement wasn't the score—it was doing it while playing sport, coaching, and maintaining a life. Now, I help my students do the same. Whilst I pride myself on explaining concepts and teaching, my work doesn’t just mean simply tutoring school work an content, but rather also a mentor, who can actually teach your child how to study, manage stress, and balance a busy life is much harder. What makes my sessions different? I don’t just re-teach the textbook. I act as an Academic Coach. Drawing on my background as a sports coach and Student Mentor at Loreto as well as my extensive tutoring experience, I focus on: ✅ Holistic Support (Years 7–10): I cover English, Maths, and Science in single sessions if that is what the student needs. No need to hire three different tutors. ✅ The "Hidden" Skills: Time management, essay structuring, and how to juggle co-curriculars without drowning. Teaching them not to learn just in my classes but how to learn and practice themselves after the lesson ends. ✅ Evidence-Based Learning: I use evidence-based study techniques like active recall and spaced repetition but integrate them in simple ways without overcomplicating it to students through the tasks and activities we do. They don’t worry about the science behind it, I do it for them! ✅ Genuine Rapport and Connection: “I hate English because my teacher is really bad.” (This actually can be true to an extent). The foundations of teaching and learning START from a student’s openness to learn and this comes from having a good relationship with their teacher. I make it a conscious effort to build a unique and supportive relationship with all my students so that they look forward to our sessions. Currently on offer: Year 3-9 English, Maths and/or Science Online Tutoring 📚 - Group tutoring – 2-3 students: Group tutoring is an extremely effective way of learning and involves creating a stimulating and welcoming environment that helps keep engagement high and whilst stimulating critical thinking by bouncing of other students’ ideas and observing others’ learning styles, strengths and weaknesses. - Private tutoring – One on one personalised tutoring certainly also provides its benefit with more personalised and focussed learning on individual needs, ideal for those who feel that they require specialised assistance such as either needing to catch up in certain areas or that they would like to develop their skills beyond what is required at their year level. My Track Record: * 4+ years experience, 50+ students, 1000+ hours logged. * Scored 40+ in all my VCE subjects (English, Methods, Chem, Bio, PE, Chinese). * Specialist in VCE English & General Science/Maths for Lower Secondary. VCE ENGLISH TUTORING (YEARS 11 & 12) English is the only subject that MUST be in your top 4 subjects counting towards your ATAR. Whilst I hated English in year 11, I grew to love it in year 12 and ended up with a raw 47 in English (~top 1%) and scored in the 99th percentile in the essay-writing section of the GAMSAT (entrance test to medicine). I graduated from a school with an incredibly strong VCE English department and learnt plenty of insider tips and tricks. Even if you are super busy, you can make exponential improvements in English if you do the right thing. In my sessions I offer: ✅ Evidence-based strategies and techniques: I’ve incorporated these into writing activities and tasks for my students to simply learn, take home and easily slot into your study timetable. No need to waste the mental load learning and thinking about how to incorporate them yourself. ✅ Time management & Planning essays: I teach you exactly how to curb and prevent writers block, how to plan essays in merely minutes, and train you so that you are never short of ideas. ✅ Structure. Structure, Structure. Yes there is plenty of creativity in English, but those who have their structure known inside-out are the ones who are able to articulate their ideas best. I provide structure to all my lessons and writing and pass these on to my students. ✅ 24/7 Support and Feedback: Feedback and communication is incredibly important and I make it a priority to provide support and feedback on essays/homework in a timely manner. Limited number of 2026 Intakes open now. 📩 Send me a message to chat about you/your child’s goals for Term 1.

I had the privilege of learning from Mia and I can confidently say she is the best tutor I've ever had. Her teaching style is engaging, clear, and tailored to my learning needs, making even the most challenging topics feel manageable. Mia was patient, encouraging, and always willing to go the extra mile to help me succeed. In English, I struggled with text analysis and critical thinking, however Mia helped me improve these skills and topics through her dedication as a tutor and how she personalised sessions to suit my needs. She invests a lot of time and effort in her tutoring, and provided me detailed feedback on my essays, which significantly improved my structure, grammar, and overall clarity. In Maths, Mia made complex concepts simple to understand. Although I was intimidated by many different topics, Mia was able to break them down and simplify them, making them far more manageable for me. She always ensured I had a strong grasp on concepts before moving onto advanced topics.

I was blessed to have Mia as my English tutor for my final year of schooling. Having zero interest in this subject, I was amazed to see how she had helped me to survive this subject, only because of numerous practise essays along with the detailed feedbacks. Her specific and honest feedback helped me to improve each time, thus enabling me to get good grades in both my SACs and final exam. I was very thankful for having Mia as my tutor, and I promise that she is the best English tutor available who genuinely wants her students to succeed.

I had the pleasure of being taught by Mia, and I can confidently say she is one of the best educators I've ever had. Her teaching style is engaging, clear, and incredibly effective. She creates a pleasant environment that feels supportive and inclusive, making it easy to participate and ask questions. Mia’s dedication to her students is evident in the way she tailors lessons to different learning styles and goes the extra mile to ensure everyone understands the material. Her enthusiasm for the subject matter is contagious, and she has a unique talent for making even the most challenging topics accessible and interesting. Beyond academics, Mia also fosters a sense of community and respect among her students, which makes learning with her a truly enjoyable experience. I am incredibly grateful for the time I’ve spent in Mia’s class and would highly recommend her to any student looking for an inspiring and dedicated teacher.

Mia is an AWESOME tutor and I say this genuinely from the bottom of my heart. Not only has Mia guided me through VCE English, she provides the best mental support and encouragement ever! Unlike many other tutors, Mia’s feedback is detailed, specific and honest. Her approach in helping you includes providing the necessary resources, brainstorming unique ideas and interpretations, quick feedback, even specific suggestions catered to impress your picky English teachers at school. She is familiar in the newly introduced creative writing section in the study design, and consequently what teachers may be looking for there. To top it off, Mia offers formulaic approaches to your essays, allowing for no time wasting in your exams, whilst sustaining originality and creativity in your work. Trust me, Mia is the best! - coming from a student who never enjoyed English previously.
