Having designed exam questions myself, I know that is exactly what examiners are trying to catch out, and I teach students how to think past it. My name is Chris Cheah, and I am a specialist mathematics tutor covering Year 7 to Year 12, with a particular focus on senior mathematics in Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2. I completed a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) at The University of Sydney in 2023, majoring in Mathematics and Financial Mathematics/Statistics as a Dalyell Scholar, graduating with a Distinction WAM. I am currently undertaking a part-time Master of Statistics at UNSW alongside full-time work. I have been tutoring mathematics privately for over 6 years, running continuously throughout university and alongside my professional career. After graduating from university, I joined Matrix Education as a mathematics teacher, teaching across Year 7 to Year 12 Extension 2, and led the development of their hardest HSC Mathematics Advanced exam questions, written to match or exceed the difficulty of real HSC end-of-paper questions. During university, I also worked with Sydney Centre of Mathematics on resource creation, solution writing and student exam marking. I have additionally contributed to a published HSC Mathematics Extension 2 textbook, reviewing and correcting questions and solutions across the syllabus. This experience across teaching, resource development and exam design means I understand HSC questions from the inside, where most students only ever see them from the student's side. With extensive experience designing HSC-style exam questions, I understand how they are structured, the intentional design behind each question, and how examiners can always present a familiar concept in an unfamiliar way. A common mistake students make is trying to rote learn their way through mathematics, but modern HSC exam papers are specifically designed to punish that approach. I focus on developing genuine mathematical understanding and problem solving skills so students can read an unseen question, work out what is actually being asked, and reason through it from first principles. Beyond the classroom, I have worked professionally in applied mathematics and data, first as a Game Design Mathematician in the gaming industry and now as a Data Analyst, which gives me a broader perspective on where mathematics actually leads beyond school. That perspective shapes how I teach. My lessons are tailored to each student. For students who are struggling, I focus on rebuilding fundamentals, identifying weak areas and building genuine confidence through worked examples. For stronger students, I push toward harder exam-style problems, deeper reasoning and extension-level thinking beyond rote method recall. Among students I have worked with, one came to me with only a few months left before their HSC, averaging 50-60% in prior assessments, and lifted to an external HSC mark of 87. Another I worked with long-term improved from around 60% in junior mathematics to scoring 98/100 in Mathematics Advanced and 46/50 in Extension 1. These are just two examples of the range of students I have taught and the improvements that are possible with the right focus. I primarily tutor online. In-person tutoring may be available around Strathfield by arrangement. My base rate is $100/hr for 1-on-1. Feel free to reach out to discuss your needs and whether I would be a good fit.

Reviews

Chris is a talented and amazing tutor. He is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and willing to explain topics and work through questions with as much detail as needed until I understood. He is also quick to respond and assist with maths problems outside of lessons (including at the odd hours a year 12 student would stay up cramming). As someone who wasnโ€™t the best at maths, this helped me immensely. He is very approachable and has a good sense of humour. His teaching helped relieve the bucketloads of dread I associated with the subject. I wish I had found him earlier; I wouldnโ€™t have achieved the ATAR (and thus dream UTS Engineering course) I aimed for without him. I highly recommend Chris to any high school student! I first started lessons with Chris late into my year 12 when I was averaging 50-60% for Mathematics Advanced. Chris's help allowed me to turn my performance around which led to my final HSC external mark to be 87. This massive jump is credited towards the effort Chris puts into his lessons, which are I found to target my specific weak points with course inclusive content that he identified as this is his area of expertise. I highly recommend Chris as a mathematics tutor as his knowledge surrounding the HSC is extensive and his lessons are thorough. Overall the experience in Chris's classes were welcoming and enjoyable, my only regret is not discovering Chris's lessons earlier.

Chris is a great tutor who understands how to help his students in learning difficult concepts and ideas. He takes the time to explain things in a way that makes sense. I started out failing all my math classes, but Chris helped me immensely and I improved my grades so much. Would definitely recommend!

Chris was an absolutely exceptional tutor for me throughout both my senior years in year 11 and 12 for advanced and extension 1 mathematics, allowing me to excel in both subjects in my HSC wherein I ultimately scored 98/100 in advanced and 46/50 in extension 1. Specifically, his atmosphere and way of teaching allowed me to develop more of an interest in maths and develop logical thinking skills rather than sticking to the same rinse and repeat formulas (which got me 98 in advanced as it was a very logic-based exam), becoming an integral part of my HSC success. At this point it's unfathomable to think that I was getting 60% consistently in year 9 and below yet through both perseverance and Chris' support, it's now clear that I have developed a lot in not only my mathematical thinking but my appreciation for the subject itself.

I had Chris as my maths tutor for maths extension. Chris guided me with overcoming barriers and weaknesses in the topics I had difficulties with and helped me further improve my skills in overcoming those challenging math questions. Whenever I had questions I couldnโ€™t do or understand, I would often ask for help from Chris during our tutoring lessons. While it takes me hours to answer some tackling math questions, Chrisโ€™ explanation and method of solution for each difficult question helped me comprehend the solutions clearly in a short amount of time. Furthermore, when it comes to resources, e.g. textbook exercises, past papers and more for each maths topic, Chris always had additional resources for me to revise on. Therefore, if you are looking for a maths tutor whether you are in your senior years or not, Chris is an amazing maths tutor who will guide you in acing your maths subject. I had Chris as my maths tutor for maths extension.

Chris has been a great help for me in fine tuning my self-published Extension 2 textbook. He helped find errors and typos in the text, and emailing back and forth was always a pleasure because of his friendliness, great communication skills and passion for mathematics.
