About

UNSW Law || English Tutor I am offering private, online Year 4 - 12 English individual or group tutoring from the comfort of your own home (other subjects are at the bottom of this listing). Hi! My name is Michelle and I am a 5th year law student at UNSW. I also study International Studies and am completing my third diploma in the French language. I also hold a diploma in music (piano). I graduated from Meriden School in 2019 and completed the HSC with an ATAR of 99.5 and a HSC All-rounder award. I have had 4 years of tutoring experience, including previously teaching HSC-level English at a top tutoring school in Sydney. Here, I taught over 50 students, helping them achieve top marks for both internal assessments and the HSC. I have extensive familiarity with the current HSC English Advanced and English Extension 1 syllabus, having sat the first iteration of the paper, and teaching it in the consecutive years. |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| [ENGLISH TUTORING STYLE] My tutoring style for English is heavily focused on refining the students' independent analytical skills, and providing individualised feedback, as I have found that these two entities are crucial to achieving top grades, regardless of year level. I pay attention to the progress of each individual student, group lessons being no exception, and I provide resources and comments based on 3 factors: the quality of work produced by the student, the student's personal growth and improvement, and the student's own academic goals. |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| [PASSION FOR ENGLISH - FROM D'S TO A'S] Admittedly, I was not born holding a book and reciting Shakespeare in the nursery. English was not my strong suit as a child, and I struggled to maintain even average grades at times. However, after I personally had a wonderful tutor during my middle high school years, who opened up my passion for the subject, my marks (and more importantly, my motivation to read and study) skyrocketed, and I completed English Extension 2, English Extension 1 and Advanced English in Year 12, achieving high Band 6's. Therefore, I have first-hand experience of the process of going from 'square 1' to a mark in the high 90s for HSC. This has helped me assist many students, for example, go from C and D-range marks to high B's and A's in under one term. Students have also told me that they initially 'hated English' but now will independently seek to read and analyse literature after learning with me. Thus, another critical factor of my teaching is that I strive to foster a genuine interest in English literature for all my students, while still guiding them to keep on track to reaching their academic goals based on external deadlines. |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| [OTHER SUBJECTS] FRENCH: Having just studied in France for a year (all university courses and exams completed in French), obtaining 2 French diplomas in that time and currently completing a third at UNSW, I can also assist students studying French. MUSIC: I have an AMUSA diploma in piano, and I achieved Band 6s in Music Extension and Music 2 (performance elective). I rarely dropped a mark in music analysis and essay writing, so I am more than happy to assist students in these areas as well. LEGAL STUDIES: Being a law student at one of Australia's top law schools, having worked at a law firm, and having completed this HSC subject myself, I have updated knowledge of law-related topics in the country. This is another subject I am willing to assist students in, though the syllabus may have had revisions since I sat the paper myself. |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| [WELL-ROUNDED STUDENTS] With the unwavering support of family and friends, I was a busy bee during both primary and high school, having participated in many co-curricular activities, including music, sport, advocacy and held leadership roles. I even passed my diploma piano exam in the middle of my Mathematics Extension 1 HSC exam (which I achieved a high Band 6 in), and an Intermediate Foundation (RAD) ballet exam during my Prelim exams! I am more than happy to help my students arrange their time wisely so that they can improve their academics, while not compromising their enjoyable co-curricular and social lives, becoming the well-rounded students that top universities seek. |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| [ONLINE TUTORING] I am only offering online tutoring at the moment, but to ease any worries, I have included a bit of information about my experience as an online tutor in the past: I began my journey as a tutor right on the cusp of the pandemic. Therefore, it could be said that I was among the pioneers of large-scale online tutoring (joking!). In all seriousness, I had many online students during this time, and unlike the usual trends, my online classes actually grew in size during the pandemic. I therefore can establish (and in the past have established) a rapport with students through a screen, and the non-existent travel time allows the students, their parents, and myself to organise their day more efficiently. Many students also prefer to learn online, as they are more comfortable with virtual interactions, meaning they are more likely to absorb the knowledge at their own pace without the pressure of a face-to-face environment. |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| If what I can offer sounds like a perfect fit for you, feel free to message me with any queries. I look forward to becoming a part of your academic climb! Note: The listed time slots may already be taken by other students. Please message me to organise a lesson time - after-school hours on weekdays are limited but may be possible!
