My personal experience of the HSC has taught me a series of strategies which I believe could be of help to any student. For example, my Year 12 school week would often involve, in addition to 15 Units worth of morning, lunchtime and regularly scheduled classes, up to 12 hours of competitive volleyball, 6 hours of school debating, school captain commitments, and part-time work. Yet I found that time management was rarely an issue -- indeed, I often became more productive the busier I was.
For a large portion of high school, Latin and Greek involve an almost dogged deference to their textbooks, with progress marked by the memorisation of increasingly long vocabulary lists. Combing through Quizlet flashcards is an often tedious and fruitless exercise. For me, it was always more beneficial to search instead for patterns, form etymological bridges with English, or investigate the language in the context of interesting literature.
This is why I believe that there lies in each engaged student the ability to far outstrip the pace of high school language-learning. My experience tutoring in these subjects has indicated this belief to be accurate. Speaking personally, I feel I have been able to apply these techniques to my own study of Greek at university, where I have passed very quickly from learning the language itself, to taking multiple senior units on Greek poetry and drama. My average mark in Greek at the University of Sydney is 97/100.
I consider Classics and education to be some of my greatest passions, and I look forward to the opportunity to foster in high school students a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wonderful world of ancient literature.
In the interests of ensuring that students are entirely comfortable with my teaching methods, I am happy to offer the first lesson free of charge!
