About

Hello! I am Jean-Paul and I am currently an Honours student studying pure mathematics at the Australian National University (ANU). I graduated from ANU with a Bachelor of Laws (with honours) and Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences in 2023. I am from Burnie, Tasmania. I completed my secondary studies at Marist Regional College and graduated in 2018 with an ATAR of 98.65. I have experience tutoring grade 11s and grade 10s during my time in grade 12, which was the first time I started tutoring students, and I received a certificate from the school as well. I like to understand how people think and teach them the content in a style suited to each individual; my aim is to make people understand maths rather than to do maths. I hope to achieve my objective despite my heavy workload every semester. In 2021, I tutored seven students, ranging from grade 10 to 2nd year university, all of whom were happy with my tutoring and how that reflected on their excellent reports at the end of the year. In 2022, I tutored four students and was able to consistently maintain weekly sessions despite my double employment at ANU and a law firm. I have loved maths ever since grade 1 and it has been amazing that I am able to continue to study mathematics at a university level. The reason why I love maths is that it is fun and challenging at the same time, which I cannot say is true about other subjects in my opinion. Maths grants me satisfaction when I solve problems and connects me with other people who love maths. My interest in law manifested in grade 7, at the time when I am growing up and starting to understand that the country and the world operated in a legal system. My interest expanded as I participated in debating competitions and took Legal Studies in grade 12. Studying law offers me the opportunity to develop a range of legal skills, provide legal and practical advice to clients and explore many aspects of human society. Contrary to what many people say to me, I believe that law and mathematics can work together in tandem to enhance logical thinking to a whole new level, even if those two subjects may seem like an odd combination.

Reviews

When I first signed up to Jean's class I despised doing math and therefore I was falling behind. However, the way Jean teaches math changed my outlook on the entire subject. Instead of just spitting formulas at you as most teachers do, Jean phrases each question not as a problem but as a puzzle to be solved. To this end, he is excellent at linking math concepts that would have otherwise seemed unrelated which leads to a more holistic understanding of the subject. Jean, of course, is not infallible in his knowledge but when he doesn't know the answer to a question or is unfamiliar with a topic he dives head first into learning the concept for himself so then he can pass on the knowledge to you. It has been a pleasure being taught by Jean over the one and a half years that I was and I cannot recommend him enough.
