Hi! My name is Alana and I graduated from Lauriston Girls' School in 2019 with an IB score of 42/45 (ATAR 99.25). I am currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Commerce at Monash University. I have two years of tutoring experience and can adapt my teaching style and method to best suit you to help you achieve your goals!
I am happy to tutor the following IB subjects, and have listed the scores I got for each one:
- Economics HL: 7/7
- Chemistry HL: 7/7
- Physics HL: 6/7
- Maths SL: 7/7
I also have experience teaching Units 1-4 VCE Chemistry and Units 1-4 VCE Maths Methods.
I believe that it is so important to really understand key concepts and the dot points in the subject guides, instead of rote learning content. We can work through these together to ensure that you have a sound understanding of all the course content. I can also provide help with IAs and structuring your assignments.

Alana has been our sons tutor since August 2022. Jordan was in year 11 when Alana first started helping him with VCE Math Methods. Alana continued helping him weekly up until June this year. Alana would also help him occasionally with Chemistry upon request which was wonderful. Alana has always been flexible with her time as sometimes we had to change days/times due to his year 11 and 12 workload. He had a great relationship with Alana and each session was extremely helpful. His marks improved and Jordan benefitted immensely from Alana’s tutoring sessions.
Alana is kind, has a friendly approach and explains everything clearly - we would absolutely recommend Alana to any student needing assistance with their studies. We miss Alana and wish she could still assist Jordan.

Alana is a dedicated tutor, she has a great ability to explain complex concepts with clarity and patience. She is a caring tutor and has always demonstrated great flexibility to accommodate our needs. My daughter’s Maths grades have improved considerably as a direct impact from tutoring. I am equally thrilled with her new found confidence in Maths as she no longer dreads Maths class. I highly recommend Alana and am grateful for her wonderful support.

Alana tutored me for years 11 and 12 in IB maths and was the main reason I did both well enough to earn a distinction aswell as genuinely enjoyed the subject. She explains things so clearly and is so supportive. Highly recommend!

Alana has been a wonderful, knowledgable and extremely effective tutor for my son studying year 12 IB Chemistry. Judged on results alone Alana has been brilliant, taking my son from a point where he was struggling to even pass chemistry, to being extremely confident in the subject to the point where it has become his best subject. Alana has also been very communicative and flexible and always been a pleasure to deal with. I would highly recommend Alana.

Alana has been so kind and amazing in guiding and supporting me in preparation for my final IB Economics exams. She has been very easy to communicate with, and having done the course herself, Alana has great knowledge of the course as well as what to expect from the exams. Each of our classes were personalized to target specific areas in the course that I struggled with, where Alana would break down and explain the content in a concise and comprehensible manner. Thanks to Alana, I was able to complete the course and my exams confidently. I definitely and highly recommend Alana for any students struggling to understand any content in Economics, and I am sure she will be of tremendous help!

Alana tutored me for 3/4 methods and chemistry this year. She was a great support and had a really good way of explaining concepts and helping understand topics. Alana was always happy to cater around times which worked for me, making it much easier to navigate especially when SACs and other busy periods were coming up. I highly recommend Alana!! I found her to be a great help and our sessions gave me that extra bit of confidence and assurance when it came to SACs.

Alana was absolutely fantastic with helping my son prepare for his IB exams. She patiently coached him through high level chemistry. He was really struggling but with Alana's help he felt that he performed very well on the exam. We were so happy with her approach that we asked her to help out in Physics as well. She always made herself available and was very reliable. I can't speak highly enough of her tutoring skills not to mention that she is a lovely person!

Alana started tutoring me for further in year 12 and she helped me so much. From a student who would struggle to understand content she helped me break it down and go through many practice questions together. On top of that, Alana knew how I best learnt and what I needed assistance on, so she was able to focus on what I really needed help with in order to succeed. I highly recommend Alana also because she is such a friendly and kind soul and I have been able to build a friendship with her also over this year of tutoring, which has made me excel in a subject I wasn’t originally fond of.

I can highly recommend Alana Hayes-Chen who recently provided Spanish ab initio tutoring for my teenage son who is completing the IB Diploma/Year 12. Alana communicated with us promptly and worked with our schedule to provide intensive tutoring to an extremely high standard. Her skills in this subject were very evident, and her ability to convey information clearly meant that my son achieved his goals. I enlisted Alana's help for chemistry SL towards the end of my IB Diploma Program, and despite the reasonably short amount of time we had together before my final exams, she helped me tremendously. Alana set up a comfortable learning environment which was personalised to target my specific concerns within the subject and she was able to use her personal experience as a past IB student to clearly communicate concepts in a way that would be directly applicable to the exams. Each session was highly engaging and they not only worked to improve my general abilities in the subject, but the confidence I had in myself.
