About

Hi! My name’s Harry and I'm an Honours Student in English Literature with a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of Sydney. I’ve been a private English tutor and debating coach for five years, and currently spend most of my time doing independent theatre as a writer and producer. When I was in Year 11 and 12 I was so lucky to have a great English teacher at school and an amazing private tutor, both of whom helped me grow as a scholar and writer. My life is infinitely richer because of that experience. Studying English at school has two obvious benefits, in my opinion. The first is that it forces you to grow as a writer and thinker; you have to learn how to make and then support bold and original claims, and express yourself as compellingly and concisely as possible. If you honestly and doggedly learn how to do this, those skills don’t just evaporate after the HSC, but shape every part of your life. Learning how to write and think isn't something you do just to get a mark in a test, but do to become a more empowered person. That first benefit still views studying English in somewhat instrumental terms i.e. working hard in this subject will give me x tangible benefit, but English is also a discipline just utterly filled with beauty. To me, the best poems, novels, plays or films lie at the intersection of the beautiful and interesting. The deeper you go into understanding a masterpiece by Shakespeare or Henry James or Virginia Woolf the more rich and magical the work becomes. When you become so immersed in a text the line between you and the author seems to fade away, as you feel what it’s like to be in their skin. As you write an essay on a text, hopefully who you are on the inside is re-written at the same time, and changed into something more generous, nuanced and alert to the world around you. Studying literature is one of the best things that someone can do with their time, and it doesn’t have to just be a hurdle to overcome so you can get into a certain career or university degree. I approach teaching English through this lens, and I've spent years trying to build up young people into more independent and capable individuals with those skills in writing and reading, while trying to carve out a space for them to fall in love with texts.
