About

Hi! I'm Jess, a PhD candidate in Marine Ecology at UNSW, marine biologist, and experienced science educator. I completed my Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) at UNSW with First Class Honours and am now researching how coastal urbanisation influences the recruitment and connectivity of juvenile fish across NSW estuaries. Before university, I achieved an ATAR of 91.7 and was recognised for outstanding results in the HSC. I was one of only 70 students across NSW to achieve a Band 6 in Investigating Science, became the first student in my school's history to receive a Band 6 in Design & Technology, and received Excellence Awards in Science and TAS. Throughout Year 12, I consistently ranked first in Engineering Studies, Design & Technology and Investigating Science. Since then, I've gone on to become a published researcher, marine biologist and PhD candidate, giving me both firsthand HSC experience and a strong understanding of how science is applied beyond the classroom. Biology & Investigating Science I tutor Year 11 and 12 Biology and Investigating Science with lessons tailored to the NSW syllabus. My aim is to help students build confidence, understand concepts deeply, and maximise marks in both school assessments and the HSC. I can help students with: * Understanding difficult biological concepts and scientific terminology. * Writing Band 6 responses using NESA marking criteria. * Exam preparation and revision strategies. * Scientific report writing and data interpretation. * Experimental design, graphing, statistics and analysing results. * Practical investigations and mandatory depth studies. I have extensive experience mentoring students through their depth study experiments, helping with everything from developing research questions and designing experiments to analysing results and writing polished scientific reports. Science Extension & Major Research Projects As a current PhD researcher, I specialise in helping students complete independent scientific research projects. I can assist with: * Developing strong research questions. * Experimental design and methodology. * Literature reviews. * Data analysis and interpretation. * Scientific writing and report structure. * Preparing presentations and viva-style discussions. Whether you're completing a Science Extension project, an independent investigation or another major science research task, I'll guide you through the entire research process using the same approaches employed in university research. Design & Technology I also tutor Design & Technology, particularly the Major Design Project and portfolio. I can help students: * Develop and refine project ideas. * Build a high-quality portfolio. * Improve written responses for HSC exams. * Prepare for project submissions and viva voce. * Receive constructive feedback throughout the project. Why choose me? * PhD Candidate in Marine Ecology at UNSW. * First Class Honours graduate in Advanced Science. * 90+ ATAR with outstanding HSC results, including a Band 6 in Investigating Science. * Published marine ecology researcher. * Experienced science educator, field marine biologist and dive instructor. * Friendly, patient and adaptable teaching style tailored to every student's learning style and goals. **Lesson Information** * Minimum 2-hour lessons. Can be flexible in availability * Available online or in person (UNSW campus or another mutually convenient location). * Working With Children Check (WWCC).
