About

I have been a tutor for 20 years working with students from primary school through to adults at University. I adopt a holistic approach working to improve not just understanding of the concept area, but also improve confidence, exam strategies and time management skills. I am the senior tutor at the Warilla Education Centre and work in conjunction with other tutors. Tuition rates start from $60 per hour. Higher rates apply for advanced level mathematics and statistics.

Education

Over 30 years teaching experience in the primary, secondary and TAFE sectors of eductaion. Hold several degrees including B.A, B. Soc. Science, Master Education - Psychology (Sydney Uni) and a Doctorate (Ph. D) Teaching areas include: mathematics from primary to HSC level and English from primary to high school. Science (Years 7 - 10).

I completed my HSC in 2022 and achieved a band 6 in standard mathematics. The assistance that I received from my tutor, Dr Peter Day made this result possible. I struggled during year 11 (due to the lockdowns and the fact that our Year 12 class maths teacher became sick and we had a replacement who wasn’t very helpful). Peter gave me the confidence and patiently explained the concepts that I struggled with. I highly recommend Peter as a tutor who is both experienced and knowledgeable in teaching mathematics. My daughter was tutored in mathematics by Dr. Day for her 2019 HSC. She achieved a score above 90 and was delighted with her result. Jo struggled with maths for most of her high school years, however Dr. Day gave her the confidence and skills to perform exceptionally well in her senior years. She has been offered a placement into the course that she always wanted. We highly recommend Dr. Day as a tutor who is patient, supportive and knowledgeable. Just a brief note to say that my wife and I were very pleased with the tuition that our youngest son received from the Illawarra Tutoring Centre. He has been enrolled at the Centre since the start of the year and has made steady progress throughout the year. He has grown in confidence and his marks have improved to the point that his teacher has informed us that Sean will be going into the advance maths class in 2020. We have found all the staff at the Centre to be very professional and highly recommend Illawarra Tutoring. The diagnostic assessment pinpointed the areas that Sean needed to improve upon and the individual maths program was spot on. Thank you.

My daughter who is in Year 5 at our local state primary school has been receiving maths and English tuition by Peter at the Illawarra Centre since term 4 of last year. My husband and I are delighted with the assistance provided to our daughter. Her confidence and grades have improved significantly. Her teacher has been very pleased with her progress in term one of this year. Our daughter enjoys attending the Centre and undertakes the revision exercises without any prompting from us. The work she does at the Centre is related to what she is doing in class. We highly recommend the Illawarra Tutoring Centre.

My husband and I appreciated the advise and assistance given to our son during his HSC year (2018). It was a stressful time for not only our son, but everyone in our household felt the stress resulting from the pressure on him to perform well in this HSC. Thank you for guiding our son so that he could cope with the stresses involved throughout the year. He time management skills improved over the year and this contributed to an improvement in performance that saw him achieve a band 5 in maths. He went into the HSC exam with greater confidence because he was well prepared. We thank you for helping him to reach his potential. Our son attended the Centre at Warilla and last week received his HSC results. My son was very pleased with his results, scoring 92% in maths 2 unit advanced. This was a significant improvement on his earlier results at the beginning of the year. He attributes his excellent results to Dr. Day who taught him exam strategies, helped him to understand difficult concepts including calculus and generally boosted his confidence going into the exams. My wife and I are thrilled for our son who will now be able to pursue his ambition of becoming an engineer. We are grateful for the assistance provided to our son by Dr. Day and highly recommend him as a professional teacher who can clearly communicate the maths topics to students. His written material enabled our son to practise the various topics between each session and then have his answers reviewed at the beginning of the each session. Well worth the money - a great investment in our son's future. We have now enrolled our youngest child at the Centre for 2019.

Our two high school age children have been tutored by Dr. Peter Day for the second and third terms of 2018. His knowledge of the maths syllabus and his skill in explaining the topics has boosted our children's confidence and exam performance. This was seen in their recent exam results which have made my wife and I very proud of their achievements. They have moved from middle of their respective years to now be in the top performers. The are for the first time ever achieving A's in maths! We highly recommend the Illawarra Tutoring Centre and the assistance provided by Dr. Day in helping our children to build their confidence, reduce exam nerves and develop a better understanding of the maths topics. As an educational psychologists he was able to pinpoint the areas of greatest needs for the children and then designed a program that catered for their weaknesses. It worked and we are delighted!!!
