About
Hello! My name is Allison.
I am currently studying the Juris Doctor at the University of Western Australia – a master’s level law degree. I received Direct Entry into this program in 2020, and in 2023 completed the undergraduate portion of the pathway, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce.
I have been a tutor since 2021.
I approach all sessions with an emphasis on delivering measurable academic improvement. I love learning about students' goals, both for the semester and the year ahead, and structure each lesson with these goals in mind to ensure steady and consistent progress towards them. All of my lessons are planned in advance to ensure our time spent together can be utilised in an efficient and effective way.
In all my sessions, I also emphasise heavy repetition. I believe in revisiting and practicing concepts over and over to avoid rote memorisation, and to instead ensure that concepts have been comprehended and understood. For complex concepts or ideas that are difficult to understand, I break them down into their fundamental components – often with the use of diagrams – to make them more digestible and easier to grasp. The goal of these two strategies is to ensure that students feel confident to apply their understanding to all variations of a question. I also have a bank of practice questions, papers and exams that I work through with students to reinforce concepts, and to help them understand how answers should be structured. While tutoring, I also make sure to go through each syllabus dot point, one by one to ensure that on test day students are familiar with all concepts they are asked to write on.
On a personal note, I have experience working in political offices and law firms, giving me direct experience that relates to the Politics and Law ATAR curriculum, and that allows me to provide students with knowledge and examples that extend beyond the bare curriculum.
Specifically to the Literature ATAR curriculum and English ATAR curriculum, one of the most important skills to develop is a concise and articulate writing style, as well as the ability to construct insightful and thorough interpretations of studied texts. Developing good writing and the ability to interpret texts with depth and insight under exam conditions takes time and practice – practice that we will do over and over in our sessions. I often find that students can be overwhelmed by this – but good writing is a skill like any other – and it just takes time and practice. I also like to provide formulaic ways for students to approach test questions, as I often find lack of structure to be a source of stress.
On another note, many of my students aspire to study law, and I am happy to tailor lessons to support these goals, and also to answer any questions they might have regarding admissions or law school itself.
Sessions are $85 per hour.
Group sessions are available.
Thank you.
