Personal Description:
An experienced, professional tutor, I am also a fully qualified UK science teacher (QTS/PGCE) and PhD. I specialise in teaching Year 11 and 12 Chemistry and Biology, and also Year 7-10 Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

I achieved my doctorate from the University of London and Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Science (Chemistry) from the University of Gloucestershire.

Tuition Experience:
I recently moved to Australia and, in addition to detailed subject knowledge matched to QLD (new QCE) and NSW (Stage 6) senior specifications, can offer valuable, practical experience of STEM teaching and learning, and of helping students achieve success within a national framework for schooling aimed at raising education standards. I have experience of teaching at junior and senior secondary levels across British AQA, OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations), CIE (University of Cambridge), Edexcel, and WJEC (Welsh) specifications.

A member of The Science Tutor Group, I bring to tutoring a strong understanding of what universities and employers look for in their students and employees - the knowledge, behaviours and tools young people really need to succeed.

Tutoring Approach:
Science subjects can be challenging to learn at school and difficult to grasp at pace in class but really very rewarding when learning barriers are resolved and student confidence is raised.

Understanding difficult concepts is key to doing well in science. Building the confidence and ability to apply scientific knowledge and ideas to resolve unfamiliar problems is critical to doing well in exams.

My key goal is to provide science tutoring that identifies areas of misunderstanding and under-confidence quickly and unlocks barriers to success in science learning.

My tutoring approach is exam-based and tailored to the needs of each student, so that students can build, test, and extend their knowledge and critical reasoning in areas they find difficult, and so improve their understanding and ability to think through scientific questions. This helps students develop the confidence and resilience they need to explore and resolve unfamiliar problems in science exams and build valuable transferable skills for later work and study.

Tutoring sessions can be short term focusing on specific areas of the syllabus or difficulties in understanding or application. Alternatively, they can be long term and designed to help students who may be struggling in class learn and understand science subjects more successfully over time. I also provide intensive exam prep specifically designed to help students achieve the grades they need prior to the exam season. Sessions are face to face and usually carried out in the student's home.

In our first tutor session we will discuss needs and learning so far, identify learning barriers together, and agree what type and style of tutoring help is needed.

If we all decide to go ahead, we will review the learning plan frequently and adjust it together as progress is made. This makes sure that tutor time is always well spent, always supports and extends learning at school or university, and builds towards the improvements and results you want to achieve.

I will design tutoring around your year of study and syllabus and will provide teaching, challenge activities, and exam based resources as they are needed. You will find a laptop or tablet, an internet connection, and a relevant textbook useful for tutor sessions.
