AboutHi I'm Fiona
I have been working as an artist since I graduated from the National Art School in 2009 but have had a lifelong passion and involvement in the arts. I also work part time at a commercial art gallery.
I have taught and mentored both children and adults in the visual arts, including HSC Arts tutoring. Due to my lifelong passion for and involvement in the arts and crafts industries, I have accumulated a broad range of knowledge and skills in both art and craft based techniques, to support a wide variety of mediums that students may wish to explore.
I believe that understanding and developing one’s creative process is key in the production of a successful body of work. Creative process is not just thinking about what your end product will look like. Rather, is an ongoing active engagement between the mind and the act of making. Through this ongoing process, a conversation is set up, between the mind based thoughts and ideas and the tangible results-(the art that is produced). Taking part in this conversation is how students learn to develop and find ways to persuasively represent their ideas, into an aesthetic, and cohesive body of work.
My tutoring methods are based in the act of making. Getting students making work, to explore their ideas and develop their visual language, through studies, sketching, collage, model making etc. This is underpinned by critical discussion, art theory and principles. Research and discussion of other artists (historic and/or contemporary) working with similar themes and/or techniques is also key, as this helps students to contextualise their own work within the art world, the world at large and the audience. Through this process students gain experience in developing autonomy of thought, they learn new skills and receive the support and guidance, to enjoy and successfully complete their HSC Visual Arts Course.
I can tutor students at their home, alternatively they can come to my studio in Tempe, which is easily accessible via public transport and has ample parking for cars.
