I graduated from James Ruse in 2024, achieving a state rank mark in Chemistry. Along with the state rankers in maths and science I’m working with at Tutorgum, students have achieved 99.95’s, and state rank marks in maths, physics and chemistry. But I was not always excelling. 🌕 𝗠𝗬 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 It was my first day at James Ruse. But it was Year 9. I transferred in. Maths class. Getting the 'new kid' stares while lining up for the class was hard enough when I was hit with a pop quiz on a topic I had never learned. Time ticked off by the second, painstakingly slow, until we swapped papers and my marker said my mark to be '1/32!'. I still remember my teacher's shocked face at hearing that someone could get such a low mark. Humiliation, embarrassment, not wanting to be in the room - I've experienced it all. Being known as 'the kid who can't do math' hurts. I know what if feels like to begin behind the start line. But now, I leave high school with HSC marks in the high 90s for both Mathematics Extension 1 and 2. Miracle? No. Tried and tested studying strategies that actually WORK? YES. I know how to produce actual results. Difference 1: When learning, I put in extra effort to understand why a formula is true, where is it applied, why it is so important for questions. Now when teaching, I show the meaning and the motivation behind concepts, which helps students “get” them on a deeper level and thus be able to answer harder questions in exams. Difference 2: I was going through content too quickly, which meant I had a lot of misunderstanding. Once I forced myself to precisely think about how each step or conclusion was connected, the concepts began to “click” and my marks climbed. In class, my exam styled practice questions transform concepts from abstract to concrete. It turns a random formula to something you can remember and know where to use. Every week you’ll also be getting cherry picked, exam styled questions as homework!
