I struggled again in Year 11, scoring 12/20 in my first task, and even in Year 12, my reliance on “safe” responses left me with 85/100 in trials —a turning point where I realized my approach needed a complete overhaul. I redefined my strategy, abandoning formulaic methods to craft responses that were original, reflective, and authentic. By the end of Year 12 trials, my essays—stuck in the 15-17/20 range—reflected a deeper struggle I had been grappling with throughout my academic journey. As an immigrant from Hong Kong, I struggled to reconcile the competing demands of two educational paradigms: one that valued discipline and precision, and another that demanded originality and freedom of thought.
