I redefined my strategy, abandoning formulaic methods to craft responses that were original, reflective, and authentic.
By the end of Year 12 trials, my essaysโstuck in the 15-17/20 rangeโreflected a deeper struggle I had been grappling with throughout my academic journey. As an immigrant from Hong Kong, I struggled to reconcile the competing demands of two educational paradigms: one that valued discipline and precision, and another that demanded originality and freedom of thought. My 85/100 trial mark was not just a gradeโit symbolized the weight of my displacement, a tension between two worlds I had yet to resolve.

In the 1.5 to 2 months before the HSC, I realized I needed to approach English differentlyโnot just as a subject, but as a space to explore my own identity. TS Eliotโs Poetry, part of the HSC curricula, with its fragmented imagery and themes of alienation, resonated deeply with me. By the time the HSC arrived, I no longer felt disconnected. My essays reflected both analytical rigor and emotional authenticity, placing me among the top 10-20 students in NSW.
