2nd👏in👏Chemistry👏 Meriden | 98.00 | 1st in Physics Exam | 8th in Maths Exam | $47/hr | Maths, Physics and Chemistry Tutoring | Last active: April 27th 🧱 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲? After the exam, I thought I cooked. When I received my results, I realized I had gotten cooked instead. Hi, I’m Esther, and if you’re reading this, I am sure you can recall a similar moment when you received your results and were disappointed. The first time I opened my exam results in Year 11, my heart sank faster than my grades did. I was so ashamed I couldn’t even look at my rank on the piece of paper. So, I began creating the most effective study techniques and shifting my mindset, which is something I’ll help you with too. Fast forward a term, my rank had improved by double. The next term, lo and behold, my rank had doubled again. By the end of that year, I ranked 2nd in my Chemistry exam (yep, the same me who once Googled “what even is a mole”) The next time I sat down to study for Chemistry, I asked myself: what went wrong? Here is what I realized: ▬▬▬Instead of memorizing notes like a parrot and hoping for a miracle, I started breaking down concepts, questioning why things worked the way they did, and focusing on my weak points (spoiler: there were a lot). This meant that even if I came across a question in the exam I hadn’t seen in a past paper, I was able to use my fundamental understanding of the Chemistry concept to solve the problem. ▬▬▬I also learned to understand why I lost the marks I did, so it wouldn’t happen again: did I skip a line of working? was the structure of my short answer missing a key definition? 🧱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 Amongst the state rankers in maths and science I’m working with, excellent results have been achieved: ▬▬▬ 𝗥𝗲𝗶 𝗟𝗼𝗵, 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 2023, moved from 79% to 94% in Chemistry ▬▬▬ 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗹, 𝗦𝘁 𝗨𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗮'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, 95 in Chem ▬▬▬ 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗻, 𝗦𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, 95 in Chem ▬▬▬ 𝗝𝗮𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲, 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, 95 in Physics ▬▬▬ 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗮 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝗻, 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿 2023, got 99.95 and 1st in Chemistry. ▬▬▬ 𝗝𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗬𝗮𝗻𝗴, 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻 2021, moved from 49% in Year 11 Exams to 91 in HSC Chemistry. 🧱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗬𝗼𝘂 ▬▬▬ 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝟭: 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲. To improve, I needed to learn the first-principles (absolute basics) of the topic, create my own connections between concepts, and generate my own conclusions. That’s being generative. Previously, I mindlessly regurgitated what my teacher had said, absorbing nothing and thus doing poorly on my exams. This will only give short-term learning, limited understanding and lack of enjoyment (and marks!) in the subject. ▬▬▬ 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝟮: 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁. Chemistry was the first time I had struggled to learn something. My confidence was shattered. But did it have to be this way? “I can do it if others can do it too” and “learning takes time”. I realised learning took mental effort. I leaned into the mental strain, rather than shying away from it. ▬▬▬ 𝟭-𝟭 𝘅 𝟮𝟰/𝟳. You can text or email me even after class!
