About

45 IB | 99.95 ATAR | English/TOK Specialist | 300+ Hours of Experience Hello, I’m James! The IB is CRAZY – but I’ve developed a formula for success and now I want to help you. 👨‍🎓 Here’s a little bit about me … I recently completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Newington College and am now studying a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, where I have a High Distinction WAM. I was the Dux of Newington in both Year 11 and 12. I have 300+ hours of tutoring experience and have helped numerous students achieve their goals (sometimes lofty ones), including students achieving a perfect score in the IB. 📊 Credentials – I got a Band 7 in all of my classes. However, I chose to specialise in English because that's where my passion is. I also help with TOK - my extensive study of philosophy helps enormously. ✅ English Lang & Lit HL (HL Essay 19/20, IO 37/40, Overall 86/100) ✅ TOK (Grade A – 27/30, Essay 9/10) ❓ What services do I offer? ✔️ Subject tutoring ✔️ IO mentoring/proofread ✔️ HL Essay mentoring/proofread ✔️ TOK Exhibition mentoring/proofread ✔️ TOK Essay mentoring/proofread ✔️ TOK Exhibition mentoring/proofread 👨‍🏫 Tutoring – My Approach The IB is a long journey but it moves faster than you could imagine, so I value getting started early. In English I focus on practice, practice, practice. The more texts you are exposed to the better you will perform on exam day - it's as simple as that. I have an enormous bank of practice Paper 1 texts which we will drill practice essays and scaffolds on. We'll use my comprehensive list of English techniques to learn the ins and outs of literary analysis, all while learning the formula (there is a formula!) for writing a Band 7 essay. 🧬 Assignments – My Approach Assignment in the IB, from the HL Essay to the TOK Essay, are notoriously difficult – you’re on your own with limited teacher support, reading confusing advice from random websites and sometimes parents might be more confused than you are. It’s lonely, individual and isolating. That’s where I come in. Let’s get through this process together. I take a step-by-step approach to mentoring students. We start in the preliminary stages by forming a good idea – without a good idea your IA might be limited from the word “go”. We then scaffold and workshop your writing. I’ll provide you with advice during lessons but also resources and readings to challenge your thinking outside of class time. Finally, we’ll proofread and refine your writing to reach the final product. Wherever you join me along this journey, I’ll be there to hold your hand throughout the process. 📚 TOK – My Approach TOK is by far the most unique and interesting part of the IB. Sadly, that’s also what makes it the most confusing and difficult, bar none. During my undergraduate degree, I major in Philosophy – this background in intellectual thinking, contemplation and debate informs the approach I take with my students, having studied many great philosophers: Socrates, Plato, Singer, Descartes, Locke, etc. Together we’ll step away from the random wishy-washy terms thrown around in your TOK classroom and talk about actual ideas written about by actual thinkers and philosophers. Think: postmodernism, falsification, Karl Popper. This will result in a more substantive exhibition or essay that your marker will actually understand. To that end, structure is very important – together we’ll format and structure an essay which flows and builds a cohesive argument (something most top students FAIL to do). ✍️ Proofreads – My Approach I accept proofreads at any point in the process. If it’s a preliminary draft, I can suggest ideas and structure. If your piece of work is almost finished, I can suggest revisions and new ideas which will boost your marks. I will always mark students against the IB criteria and provide comments on how to get that elusive Band 7! 🖥️ I can tutor on any online platform (Discord, Zoom, etc). Please message me with any enquiries. 👏 Good luck! I can't wait to hear from you soon!
